Irwindale is all set to  witness the high-octane motor waves for the very last time

It was in the year 2015, just after the rumors of demolition set in that the Irwindale Speedway witnessed a change of owners for the second time. This time it was taken up by Team Huddleston and Bob Bruncati, the team owner for Sunrise Ford Racing (SFR).

While it did witness quite a smooth run with events like NASCAR’s Toyota All-Star Showdown from 2003 to 2010, it is time for fans to bid adieu to the speedway now. The 21st December event is a showdown event arranged just to ensure that one can acknowledge the impact the Speedway had on the racing community.

To evoke the perfect sense of nostalgia, one will witness Jeff Marsh making it to tracks. He will be seen driving a special late modern edition and sporting a helmet with the iconic Phineas and Ferb theme. Announcing his participation in the event, Marsh took to his Instagram and posted, “So, Irwindale Speedway is having its last event ever on December 21 of this year… very sad day for short track racing in Southern California. I’ll be lucky enough to be driving a spec late model in one of the races that night… Any of the people who supported the charity events that we have had, their drivers, sponsors, friends, family, anyone who has supported our events over the last several years… Let me know if you want to join us for the final big night and I will see if I can get some passes. Please, spread the word and let’s see if we can really make this last Irwindale Speedway event a night to remember”.

The best part is that for all the fans who will be taking to the Speedway to witness this nostalgic drive, the co-creator will also personally sign autographs and take pictures. Marsh has his fair share of experience as a driver and he even competed at the Northwest Dragbike Pro Mod Hometrack. However, this time he is taking up the steering of the No. 55 car.

Will Irwindale’s closing down mean an end to South California’s Racing Scenario?

The closing down of Irwindale Speedway has evoked emotions among all fans as this has been the breeding ground for numerous services and drag races. The 20 miles east of downtown Los Angeles dragstrip is owned by IDS Real Estate Group and the idea is to build an industrial business park out of the same.

Announcing the formal closure of the track, Tim Huddleston, President of Irwindale Speedway & Event Center Inc. said, “Irwindale has been more than just a track. It’s been a home and gathering place for racing enthusiasts worldwide. On behalf of my wife Lisa and our partners Bob and Maureen Bruncati, we extend heartfelt thanks to our fans, racers, sponsors, and the City of Irwindale for their unwavering support over the past 25 years. We’re grateful for every moment and memory we’ve shared as a community.”

However, this is not the only track that has met with such a fortune. Recently, the 2-mile track at California Speedway, near Fontana was demolished. Although NASCAR had made official announcements about how it wanted to revamp the tracks into a short track, it was sold in most percentages. While the maintenance cost behind these tracks could be a major reason why they are closing down, this has sparked widespread discontent among fans.
