All the playoff contenders in the NASCAR Cup Series have a huge task ahead of them, with two races left in this round. The flow of a race can change in a matter of seconds at the usually action-packed Talladega Superspeedway. Leading the field this weekend is Denny Hamlin, who seeks his seventh win this season.

Speaking ahead of Sunday afternoon’s race, the Joe Gibbs Racing star called Talladega ‘historically wild’ race. He then highlighted why he believes so.

A lot of it is kind of putting yourself in the right place, but you don’t always know what that place will be. Historically the playoff race at Talladega is pretty wild,” Hamlin said during a media interaction.

The challenge of the playoffs

He said that another challenge of the playoff races is that the field is divided into two parts. Those not in playoff contention will drive with the mindset of having nothing to lose. The others have to race while keeping in mind the importance of stage points.

You’ve probably got two-thirds of the field that’s been eliminated that’s really not racing for much other than trying to win. You’ve got some other ones that are, looks like, you know, fighting tooth and nail for stage points,” Hamlin said further.

Hamlin expects another tough race. At the same time, he is confident of going in with a winning car.

I suspect it’ll be pretty wild again. But I’m confident that our cars are good enough to win every time we go there,” Hamlin said further. “Just sometimes it’s the number game. Toyota, as an organization we’re short on numbers than everyone else,” he added.

Hamlin then spelled out how he aims to tackle the day. “We’re just gonna count on other people to get selfish at the end and try to use them,” he added.
