Ryan Blaney made the headlines when he won his maiden Cup Series title in 2023. But he had a lot of support in his success story. One of Ryan Blaney’s first mentors and biggest fans is none other than his father Dave Blaney. When all was said and done and the Team Penske man lifted that coveted Cup Series trophy above his head, his father was right there behind him, proud of the incredible driver he raised.

Dave Blaney himself used to be a Cup Series driver. He might have not won the Cup Series title but the motorsports veteran took part in more than 450 races in the competition. He also raced in the Xfinity and Truck Series. Naturally, Dave Blaney was the one who taught his son the basic tricks of the trade.

In a recent episode of the NASCAR Live Wide Open podcast, the 61-year-old narrated the initial years after Ryan Blaney decided to become a race car driver. Dave was asked how he coached his son when he was just getting to learn race car driving.

I probably shortened his learning curve at the beginning which is probably about it but after that, he’s gotta make every lap and do it so he learned quickly and did a good job,” the 61-year-old said.

Dave Blaney is undoubtedly a proud father. After all, his son won one of the biggest prizes in the world of motorsports today. It is the former Cup Series driver’s teaching of the basics that gave Ryan Blaney a solid platform to evolve into the championship-material driver that he is today.

When asked about what the basics were that he taught his son, Dave Blaney said, “It’s basic things, when you start racing it’s just really basic. How to approach corners, how to approach trying to pass someone, it’s just all basic things that, you know, if you have a race car driver as a dad, you’re probably gonna learn that stuff quicker than somebody that wasn’t.”

Ryan Blaney deserves a lot of credit for pulling off an unlikely Cup Series victory. But a lot of the credit needs to go to his team as well. From a point in the season when they were struggling for wins, the #12 completely turned it around. As per the 29-year-old driver, they did it on a deadline.

In a recent interview with FOX, the 2023 Cup Series driver shed light on his winless run earlier in the season. He expressed his gratitude towards his team for getting the car in the best possible shape at just the right time.

“Internally, in our group, there was a lot of pride to be felt because we won the 600 in Charlotte, things are looking pretty decent [in May], and then we just go through a little time of just struggling and just having no speed.” the Team Penske man said.

“They should be proud of the work they put in through the end of the summer to get to the playoffs. They had a deadline, we were like, we need to find something to be competitive in the playoffs because how we’re running right now is not going to get the job done. They did the job. They met that deadline. And once the playoffs rolled around, we found the speed we needed to,” he added, hailing the #12 team.

One take at a time

Drivers these days need to be more like Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace. Well, now you know who my favorites are. For me, it all began with my interest in F1, but I was just tired of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen showing unparalleled dominance.
