Just hours after Martin Truex Jr pulled himself from the jaws of elimination, vaulting into the top 12, he was hit with a bolt from the blue: the loss of his ex-girlfriend after her courageous nine-year battle with cancer.

While many associate Sherry Pollex with her relationship with Truex Jr, she was no stranger to the NASCAR circuit. In 2000, the checkered flag was waved for Jeff Green, driving under the banner of PPC Racing, a team helmed by none other than Sherry’s father, Greg Pollex. But her legacy wasn’t confined to burning rubber and victory laps; she also left an indelible mark as a beacon of hope in cancer advocacy.

When Sherry Pollex stole the show with a standing ovation at “Catwalk for a Cause,” a brainchild of Truex’s foundation, it was crystal clear that her spirit was larger than life. Even though she was battling her own demons and couldn’t be there in person, her indomitable spirit shone through. This poignant moment, just days before she bid adieu to the world, was a testament to her lasting legacy and steadfast resolve to make a difference.

Fast forward to 2023, Sherry and Martin turned a new leaf, announcing their decision to part ways. Yet, their bond was far from broken, standing as pillars of support, exemplifying that their partnership transcended personal ties. The recent past has seen Truex Jr navigating choppy waters, narrowly steering his way into the Playoffs, and probably now we know the reason why.

In a moment that tugged at heartstrings, Martin Truex Jr took to the podium, sharing a poignant message honoring Sherry’s memory. He wrote, From the very minute of her diagnosis, Sherry was determined to not only fight ovarian cancer with everything she had but also make a difference in the lives of others battling this terrible disease.

“Sherry’s passion for making a difference in the lives of others was inspiring to everyone. Through her tireless charity work for so many years, her legacy will live well beyond our lifetimes and continue to help countless families who are battling ovarian and childhood cancer.

“I would like to extend my deepest condolences to her entire family, who have shown incredible strength and resilience throughout her battle.”
