His reputation as a difficult individual to work with stems not only from his intense competitiveness on the track but also from his off-track behavior and interactions with team members. His assertiveness and high expectations for performance have led some to label him as demanding and hard to please.

Kyle Busch’s Crew Chief talks about the driver’s relationship with his spotter

During the recent Talladega press conference, Randall Burnette mentioned that upon arrival, one of the significant aspects Kyle Busch wanted to discuss was his “struggles” with superspeedways. Talking to Derek Kneeland, his spotter, the #8 driver admitted to struggling at these particular venues and sought to understand the reasons behind it.

Burnette said, “He’s like, I don’t know what it is about my approach or what we do. But I’ve struggled at these superspeedway tracks. So he was very interested to see how you know Derek goes about approaching his day and how that communication goes.”

“They spent a lot of time over the winter talking about it. And listened to the tape, and doing all that… I think it paid off. Obviously, we’re in a great spot at the 500. Was really fast there all weekend and… just kind of missed out on winning that one… got loaded up at the end. But obviously, put ourselves in a position there as well.”

“So I think their relationship really good. I think Kyle’s put a lot of trust in Derek at these places, and I think it’s been paying off,” Burnette concluded.
