If there’s one guy who knows how to scout out winning talent and prospects in the NASCAR community, it has to be Rick Hendrick. Over the years, his team has had championship-winning drivers like Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, and Kyle Larson. And it looks like Mr. H and HMS are now grooming the upcoming star, Rajah Caruth, who could potentially transition into the next HMS driver.

Fresh from the win in Las Vegas in the Truck Series, Caruth is already delivering after being backed by HendrickCars.com. However, out of all the available drivers, the 21-year-old was not the best bet that Mr H could have gone for. After sub-par performances by the driver in the 2023 Truck Series season, even Caruth worried about his future in the series.

Rajah Caruth became only the third African-American driver to win a NASCAR race with his victory at Las Vegas Motorsports. However, all of this wouldn’t have been possible for Spire Motorsports #71, without the intervention of Mr. H. The young driver was struggling to rope in any primary sponsors that could support his racing ambitions for 2024.

Speaking to FOX reporter Kaitlyn Vincie, Caruth expressed his struggles in the off-season before Mr. H decided to step in. “It was pretty hard because I was going to Spire every day not knowing If I’d be able to race full time or part-time just because I didn’t have sponsor’s backing. And so just kind of stayed true to the grind, stayed true to the Chevrolet. And luckily, the Hendrick family and Mr. H and the Hendrick Cars supported me.”

Looking back, Caruth has surely made a big leap this season. It’s not just the win at Vegas; his showings at Daytona and Atlanta were very impressive as well, as they set the stage for his maiden NASCAR win.

Starting the season on a positive note is crucial for any driver to build steam for the rest of the campaign. And Caruth feels that after passing the tricky tests early in the season, his team will be able to put out its best work moving forward.

The difference in performance by Caruth from the start of last season compared to 2024 is night and day. Driving under the GMS Racing banner last season, he failed to finish inside the top 20 in the first three races. And two of those were the challenging superspeedway package races. However, with new sponsors and lifted spirits, driving Spire’s No 71 Chevy Silverado, Caruth has finished inside of the top 10 in the three races.

Explaining his feelings after a solid start to the season, Caruth added, “Honestly just relieved, because Daytona or Atlanta are such wild cards, especially on the truck side. So to come out of those races having a good amount of points going into Vegas is really cool where we can show what we’re really made of.”
