It is a common sight to see a father-son duo or a family legacy being carried on the NASCAR circuits. The same is the case with Rick Ware Racing’s owner, Rick Ware, who is still banking on his son to take his NASCAR career to new heights. However, in the case of his son, Cody Ware, the racer has been in the news for his off-the-track drama that does not paint a good picture of him. He was charged with domestic assault last summer for assaulting his girlfriend, which saw him get expelled from the 2023 NASCAR season.

With the charges against Cody Ware now being dismissed, he is looking to make a return to his team. This might look like a bold move on his part, but when you see RWR’s growth trajectory recently, you question how this move makes sense. If we are to go by Rick Ware’s recent move, he is preparing his team to be more competitive, but trying to fit Cody Ware back into the team could lead to negative ramifications. How’s that? Let us dwell on the racing side and not the off-track drama to get the real picture.

Cody Ware is not the missing piece of the puzzle Rick Ware Racing is looking for

Rick Ware is well within his rights to give his son a shot in the Cup Series, especially after last season’s controversy. The duo is looking to make a statement with the comeback. However, in trying to make up for the lost time, Rick Ware might be taking a step back by adding Cody Ware to the team’s roster. For instance, the addition of Justin Haley paired with crew Chief Lawson was a good move. To top that, they announced Kaz Grala as their anchor driver, who will feature in 25 races; both moves hint at future planning restructuring.

Not only that, but last season they did have some veteran racers like Cole Cluster and Ryan Newman to bring in a fresh perspective, which helped them build the steam for the next challenges. With the new additions, Rick Ware Racing is building on something good, but at the same time, throwing Cody back in the mix does not sound like an appealing idea. Not against the driver, but even the stats and history do not back him enough.

If you take a look at his Cup Series statistics from the past two seasons, the only top-10 finish he managed was at the Daytona 500 in 2022. That’s it; there’s nothing extra he brings to the table. He comes out as a guy who is trying too hard not to make mistakes but to keep the family flag flying high, but that has not worked in his favor. The statement made by Cody does suggest he is doing all he can to stage a comeback, but will this move prove costly for Rick Ware and his team?

As things stand, a partial schedule in the No.15 car is on the cards for Cody Ware provided he sorts out his sponsorship woes.

Grala announced that he will be aiming to attempt to feature at the Daytona 500 race under the Front Row Motorsports banner. Signed to Rick Ware Racing for 25 races, his first scheduled race on paper was at Atalanta Motorsports on February 25. There were doubts and speculations regarding who among the two would feature at Daytona under RWR, but Grala’s move has now cleared the air, thus making it almost clear that Cody Ware will pilot the No. 15 Ford Mustang.

Sponsorship woes are the major stumbling block for Cody Ware’s comeback in NASCAR. Explaining how he is in the rebuilding process, he said, “Not set in stone, but tentatively plans are to be back in the Cup car in April. We’re dotting our I’s and crossing out T’s there, with sponsorships and getting everything lined up. After my suspension last year, I lost the majority of my sponsorships, so we’re trying to build everything back up after that.”

If Rick Ware is truly aiming to scale up his team and compete against the big dogs, perhaps a plan without his son Cody Ware will fare him well in the long run.
