The Rick Ware Racing team has been around the NASCAR scene since 1998. From that time until the present day, the organization expanded its umbrella to include the IndyCar Series and the NHRA. However, in the Cup Series, their results have been less than spectacular. In 2023, the organization only managed to pick up two Top 10 finishes and had a best finish of 7th that year.

It is safe to say that RWR President Robby Benton was not the best pleased about the matter. It also didn’t help that driver Cody Ware had some off-track issues, which put him out of commission for a while. Overall, it was an underwhelming 2023 NASCAR campaign, and it has not been much of an improvement since the team’s debut in 1998.

In a recent conversation with SiriusXM NASCAR Radio, Robby Benton spoke about the upcoming season. He said, “We don’t take it lightly, but we’ve adopted in our shop, is a mentality of we don’t have any excuses why. Bringing in guys like Justin Haley, who will be full-time in the #51 and splitting the #15 entry guys like Riley Herbst. He was able to get his first Xfinity Series win toward the end of last season, and Kaz Grala, who I think will surprise a lot of people. Worked with him in the past and he’s going to come in and make a big statement. For our organisation, we don’t have an excuse why we can’t win. I think that’s what we have to lean into.”

Benton acknowledged the efforts of Rick Ware and his wife, Lisa, who invested in the team. All of their other teams in different disciplines have been very successful. So Benton feels like it is time for the NASCAR Cup team to reap the rewards. Of course, he was not suggesting that they were expecting to win races or get into the playoffs. However, they do not have a reason not to try and mount a challenge.

This season, Ford has rolled out a brand-new car for all of its teams. Rick Ware Racing will be one of those teams running the new car, and it could be their chance to upset the apple cart. Since the Dark Horse Mustang is brand new, not much is known about how the pecking order will be. As a result, RWR will be trying to figure out what makes the car tick. Especially if they are faster than the likes of Team Penske, Stewart-Haas, RFK Racing, Wood Brothers Racing, and Front Row Motorsports.

Of course, the road will not be easy, but they were off to a good start at the Busch Light Clash at the Coliseum. Justin Haley managed to qualify in 10th place, and he was the lone RWR representative. Sadly, he plummeted down the order and could only muster 21st place out of 23 cars starting the race. Now, the organization will have another shot to prove its mettle this weekend at the Daytona 500.
