For all the NASCAR and Chase Elliott enthusiasts out there, here’s a thought-provoker: Can you picture anyone else filling Chase Elliott’s shoes? Believe it or not, there once was someone in the Elliott clan primed for that spotlight – Casey Elliott. His story seems to be a mix of pride and heartache for the Elliott family. When Chase Elliott paid a paint scheme tribute to his cousin

Casey Elliott, the son of Ernie Elliott, Bill Elliott‘s brother and the engine wizard behind the Elliott family’s NASCAR triumphs in the 80s, had racing in his blood. As a teen, he jumped behind the wheel, embarking on a journey that seemed destined for glory. Just two races into his promising stint in what was then the NASCAR Busch (now Nationwide) Series in December 1993, a dark cloud loomed. A malignant growth on his right thigh changed everything. He’d been full-throttle in the Slim Jim All-Pro Series and had just dipped his toes into what’s now the Xfinity Series. But after that season, the grim reality of cancer struck.

Suddenly, the Elliott family’s dreams of building Casey’s racing career pivoted to a fight for survival. Diagnosed at only 19, Casey waged a tough battle for two years. Tragically, he passed away on January 14, 1996, a mere two months after his cousin Chase was born. Casey was just 21.

Fast forward to 2018, and Chase Elliott paid homage in a special way. At Darlington Raceway in September, during the 2018 Bojangles’ Southern 500, he drove a car adorned with a paint scheme mirroring Casey’s. Reflecting on his cousin, Chase said, “I feel like what people leave behind often tells the true story as to what kind of person they were. How much everyone missed him and talked about him years and years after he hasn’t been around says a lot, too.”

But the wound of losing Casey is still fresh in the hearts of fans. The NASCAR community, echoing across Twitter, continues to honor the memory of what could have been another Elliott racing legend.
