Remember that infamous moment among Ross Chastain, William Byron, and Christopher Bell last year at Richmond? Well, the Watermelon Man played a little mind game with the Joe Gibbs Racing star ahead of the NASCAR Cup Series race at Richmond Raceway as he took a dig at him for starting the whole #BlameRoss trend. To be fair, it did more harm to Bell than to Chastain and the Trackhouse Racing star is happy that he was not the one to say something questionable on that occasion.

Ross Chastain makes Christopher Bell look silly ahead of Cup race

It all happened at Richmond a year ago when Christopher Bell spun William Byron around, ending the Hendrick driver’s chances at a victory. And then blamed Ross Chastain for it, who was already notorious for having an aggressive style of driving. After the race, the JGR star blamed Chastain for the error even though the Trackhouse Racing driver did nothing wrong and used terms like “wrecking ball.”

The aftermath of the race saw Chastain being confident in not being at fault. Moreover, it saw Christopher Bell seeking an apology from Byron, saying that he had enough room on his left. Interestingly, his tweet was tagged with another post of Bob Pockrass’, where Bell clearly blamed Chastain for the incident. While Chastain had been at the receiving end of some fans’ anger, it quickly turned towards Bell as fans commented, “Yep it was your fault but it’s easy to blame @RossChastain. How about sorry @RossChastain too..“.

Reflecting upon this, Chastain said as he spoke about the incident almost a year later, “Yeah, I honestly didn’t even think about that till I watched the race back and saw the move and then remembered all the social media stuff which is so classic cause in the car as race car drivers, us drivers can see things our way, we see it through our helmet visor and that’s it. We don’t have much perspective on what’s really happening from a 30,000-foot view or a view from outside the car but I was glad someone else said the wrong thing and not me that day,” 

Well, this time around, the Watermelon Man will not have to worry about Christopher Bell at least at the start of the race due to their vastly far-apart starting positions and after the qualifying session, he was quite happy with himself.

Ross Chastain put in one hell of a lap to get a starting position in P3 at Sunday’s Richmond Cup race, behind a couple of Hendrick Motorsports cars. On the other hand, Bell’s was extremely disappointing and could manage only a P29. The Trackhouse Racing star took to X after the session and expressed his satisfaction with his performance.

“Made some good adjustments after practice to our @BuschBeer @TeamChevy Camaro to start P3 tomorrow! Good to be back in the crisp Busch colors for Richmond,” he wrote with a couple of pictures.

It sure will be interesting to see how the Watermelon Man fares with such a high starting position. He has never won this race but finished an impressive P3 last season. Will he be able to go a couple of places higher this season? Only time will tell.
