The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Dover has thrown a huge curve ball for the teams and drivers to deal with. An imminent threat of rain has stalled the proceedings at the venue, thus forcing the team to switch their strategies to maximize when the race goes green again. However, Sammy Smith’s No. 8 Chevy seems to have further delayed the restart of the race as his race car stalled on the track being low on fuel.

Smith was fuming after being unable to compete in the race and hurled some expletives on the radio. “Unf****** believable. We’ve got to get out shit together or I’m going to have a f****** meltdown.” With rain halting the race, the pit road was open for the race cars to make a stop and there were plenty of takers.

Interestingly, the race leader Cole Custer was also on the verge of pitting as rain seemed to have simmered down. But, unfortunately, he was too late to come down the pit road and thus had to stay out. Interestingly, this decision worked in his favor as the rain forced NASCAR’s hand to drop the red flag. Even if the race goes green again, Custer will be in a commanding position to hold onto his lead and possibly bag his first win of the season.

Sammy Smith’s day went from bad to worse at the Monster Mile

Having run out of gas, Smith’s hopes for a solid finish were washed away. However, with the race nearing its end, the JRM driver tried to test his luck in making up the track position by threading a needle through a crash. With the late caution in the race, it could have been a perfect opportunity for him to jump position. Instead, his efforts ended in a DNF finish.

It was Riley Herbst and Justin Allgaier who sparked the big one late in the race. Herbst’s 98 car lost control in the middle lane and went spinning sideways on the racetrack. Having dodged most of the racecar, Sammy turned deep into the racetrack to gain more track position for the overtime finish. But, he just rammed straight into Kyle Seig’s No. 28 Ford Mustang.

The damage inflicted on the No. 8 JRM car was beyond repairs. A head-on collision with Seig’s car, saw No. 8 tear into pieces. The front bumper detached from the body, and with a hit to the inside wall, the car was also covered in smoke. From running out of gas to ending the race by being caught in the wreck, the race was a nightmare for the 19-year-old driver.

Sammy Smith has been consistent with his finishing since the start of the season. He already has six top-10 finishes in ten starts. But the last two events haven’t turned out as the team hoped. So, perhaps it’s time for No. 8 to rework their plan and make a strong comeback at Darlington.
