William Byron has sat comfortably among the favorite drivers in the 2022 season. He won multiple races and made his way to the final 8. His speed was formidable throughout the season, and one of his best runs was at Martinsville in April. However, his win on the short track was more like retribution for the horrors that clouded Martinsville for him last year.

And this was payback for what Martinsville did to his mother.

Back in 2021, doctors diagnosed Byron’s mother with cancer. Unfortunately, when she was out watching her son race on the short track, she suffered a stroke, which resulted in the diagnosis of her cancer.

Speaking on the Gametime with Boomer Esiason podcast, Byron said, “Yeah, so my mom went through, uhh, she had cancer, she was diagnosed with cancer the previous year. It all started at Martinsville,” Byron said. “So we were just having a normal spring day. My mom and dad came up to the race, and they were sitting up in the grandstands and watching from the sweet area. And she actually went with kinda a mini-stroke event at that time and ended up being a brain tumor.”

He added, “Yeah, it was a crazy series of events in 2021. Your life kinda turned upside down at that point. She had been healthy at that time and nothing was going on.”

How is William Byron’s mother doing now?

A family member facing the ill effects of cancer is painful, and Byron had to deal with it in the middle of an important season. It makes you wonder if his mother made it out of the other end all well. And fortunately, she did!

Byron talked about how it took 6 months but she came out all well, “Knowing she had a brain tumor and then going through the diagnosis and she ended up going through the radiation treatment and about 6 months later she was cancer free.

And the best part is that Byron got his payback on the track, as he won the same a year later, “But at the time, it was a difficult situation. We didn’t know what was gonna happen. It was really cool to win at Martinsville one year later, almost to the date, the same weekend of the year. That was really special. She was up at the pit box and everyone watched the race.”
