First of all, let us address the elephant in the room. Why are sedans suffering a setback as more and more customers opt for crossovers and compact SUVs? Well, the short answer might be the polarizing design philosophies manufacturers push forward as they strive for something futuristic. The world’s largest automobile manufacturer, Toyota, is a perfect example to prove our point here.

Unlike most manufacturers taking the EV route, the Japanese automobile giant still is tweaking its internal combustion engines to maximum efficiency. However, they might have taken a step too far with the facelift of its popular model, Camry.

While the sedan comes out of the showroom with 225 horses, Toyota has taken its hybrid approach to a whole new level by taking a bold move, prompting car enthusiasts and fans to draw a comparison with Elon Musk’s Tesla. Here’s how Toyota probably has killed its own game.

Toyota faces the heat as they unveil the polarizing 2025 edition of Camry

If the crossover SUV, RAV4 is its bread and butter with the highest selling numbers, Toyota’s Camry is the manufacturer’s top-grossing sedan in terms of number and volume. In fact, the vehicle was so successful that the manufacturer could push multiple cars in the same platform slightly tweaking the engine, tuning and de-tuning it according to the market’s needs, and even featuring it in racing as in NASCAR.

But, the 2025 iteration of the car has taken it a step too far. While manufacturers like Tesla, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, etc all have changed the narrative, dishing out electric models, Toyota was investing time and money in polishing its 2.5L hybrid system. The years of effort paid dividends as the engine-motor combination boasted the maximum fuel efficiency one could produce from an IC engine.

But no one could anticipate their next move. They went from having a potent 6-cylinder mill in the road-going version of the Camrys to having just the hybrid configuration in its 2025 model. Consequently, omitting the basic engine configuration for a hybrid setup has the manufacturer on the back foot as enthusiasts dub it, “Ugly AF”

Reliability and versatility are the major selling point of Camrys. While the hybrid layout was exceptional for city use, especially used extensively as taxis and cabs, the V6 trim gave the enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies the oomph to go ballistic. Sadly enough, it looks like that’s in the past now as Toyota is rolling out an AWD electric version instead of the gasoline-powered setup with the hybrid trim as the base model.

This, along with the model’s futuristic yet off-beat looks, has riled up car enthusiasts and racing fans alike, denouncing the 2025 as “Just a Crown with a different body.”

Although a major chunk was against the omission of the V6 configuration, some users liked the hybrid technology getting the spotlight. One user wrote, “It looks as boring as the new Accord. Good news on the hybrid strategy though.”

Others simply did not take a liking to the design as they bashed the car’s look mercilessly, arguing, “Wow. They went from something sporty and sexy for a sedan and went to a slightly less ugly Tesla. #spotoff; Reminds me of a Ford Fusion for some reason.”

One take at a time

Picture this: a fast & well set-up car roaring its V8 glory, zipping through the country roads. I’m the sort of person who’ll be instantly drawn to something like that. While major racing promotions have stepped closer to the EV revolution, NASCAR still has their V8s singing its tune, which got me into the world of Stock Car Racing.
