When the 2023 NASCAR Cup season wraps up, Kevin Harvick will retire from the sport. However, he is going to trade his steering wheel for a microphone in the commentary booth. But, if he thinks that commentating is going to be a walk in the park, he is dead wrong.
Apparently, Dale Earnhardt Jr has a bit of bad news for the 2014 Cup Series champion.
The gig is actually a lot of hard work, and some things may sound silly, but they will have to roll with it.

What has Dale Earnhardt Jr so riled up?
In the latest episode of the Dale Jr Download, Dale Earnhardt Jr revealed what awaits Harvick and future commentators. As it happens, they have to work a bit closely with NASCAR for a few key aspects during race weekend. Dale Earnhardt Jr evidently found it really silly and unnecessary.
Dale Jr ranted on his podcast, “One of the very basic things they give us, is called a one-liner sheet. Its a one-sheeter. Every driver in the field, and one line. Basically the most important thing about that driver for this race. Like, Austin Dillon… three Top 5s in the last five races here. The one-liner is literally a bullet to use on the show. It’s basically there for you to just spit out anytime you feel like it’s convenient and it matters.”
In essence, the commentators are giving the fans some factoids about their favorite drivers. According to Dale Jr, the information comes in the form of simple one-line sentences. So the commentators’ job is to just read them out. The research all comes, courtesy of NASCAR, so the commentators simply read the one-liners. However, the former Daytona 500 winner was a bit wild about one aspect of this task.

The ex-Hendrick Motorsports driver gave an example to prove his point
He continued, “Them boys will write it in such a backwards way. Instead of saying ‘Austin Dillon, three Top 5s in the last five races here’. The bullet will be, ‘Austin Dillon, in the last five races here, he has finished in the Top 5 three times’.”
“It’s twice as long as it needs to be. You would never say it that way on television. I’ll bring some examples, they will write out a bullet in the long form. There’s some really odd stuff, like in the last 11 races here, eight times he’s scored a Top 5 finish. I’m like, ‘Why didn’t you just say, eight Top 5s in the last 11 races?’.”
“That’s the way you say that.”

In layman’s terms, the ones in charge of writing the one-liners write in passive voice. This bumps up the word count of the driver tidbits, and this practice has left Dale Jr baffled. He insisted that it would be far easier to write the facts in active voice and make the sentences shorter. Unfortunately, it looks like this practice may not change anytime soon, and Kevin Harvick may have to deal with this next season.
