Speed may be one of the most crucial things in any motorsports competition but appearances also draw fans. A good-looking livery or paint scheme never fails to attract the attention of motor racing lovers and the world’s oldest motorsports series seems to have hit the nail in that respect. Argentina’s Turismo Carretera Series is attracting much attention from NASCAR fans over how their cars will look in the 2024 season.

With an extensive history spanning over eight decades, the Turismo Carretera is the oldest auto-racing series still active today. It inaugurated the inception of the stock car racing competition in 1937 with 12 races. Flaunting a format similar to that of NASCAR with ‘normal’ and ‘special’ races, this series has steadily remained on the scene.

An 8-decade-long history and one dominant American team

The Turismo Carretera will have cars whose bodies have been inspired by NASCAR’s Next-Gen cars, V8 Supercars, and Trans-Am. The new cars were unveiled in front of the Aldo Cantoni stadium, in the city of San Juan. There were several eminent officials in attendance, like authorities from the ACTC, several pilots, and the Secretary of Sports of the Province of San Juan, Jorge Chica.

The new season will be the 86th installation of the competition. Mariano Werner is the defending champion and he will look to repeat what the iconic Fangio did in the 40s, win back-to-back championships. It won’t be an easy task, but a successful title defense is something he has already done in 2020 and 2021 with Ford.

One of the biggest rivalries in the Turismo Carretera is the one between Chevrolet and Ford. In the long history of the competition, Ford has been the most successful team with a 19-year winning streak from 1947 to 1965. Chevrolet has also recorded several title wins but not as dominantly as Ford has.

Regardless of the past, the future of the competition looks good. The new-look cars are a treat to the eyes and it did not take NASCAR fans long to sing their praises.

The new-look cars are a change from the body styles that were used since the 1970s. The upgrade has been appreciated as one fan commented that it was an improvement. “Apparently these are replacing body styles that the series has used since the 70s. I’d say it’s an improvement,” they wrote.

“These look sick. Kinda sad to see the old cars go, they’re totally wild and I love how they look plastered in billions of logos, but these look amazing,” commented another user.

One take at a time

Drivers these days need to be more like Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace. Well, now you know who my favorites are. For me, it all began with my interest in F1, but I was just tired of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen showing unparalleled dominance.
