At the Darlington Raceway, there was a hairy moment for Stewart-Haas Racing driver Kevin Harvick. This was because his race came to a fiery end and he was obviously not happy about it. The furious driver blamed ‘crap*y’ parts for his fiery retirement and added more arsenal to the complaints about the Next Gen car.

NASCAR senior vice president Scott Miller has addressed the issue.

He said, “We’re certainly digging into the cause. We have cars down there this morning, looking for any signs of anything that may have triggered that. You know, we have done so all year. There’s a lot of rubber at Darlington, the cheese grater that we always talked about.”

“We’re not certain if rubber getting into the rocker box was the problem or not. We’re debriefing it all. It’s unacceptable for the cars to catch on fire.”

What else did the NASCAR VP say in response to Kevin Harvick?

Truthfully speaking, there have been more and more complaints about the Next Gen car. This is largely pertaining to the safety aspect of the cars. Already, many drivers have taken hefty hits during wrecks, and Kurt Busch’s prolonged absence is just proving their point. However, the other major problem is the cars’ flammability. Being the latest victim, Kevin Harvick was fuming, and Scott Miller is insistent that they are looking for solutions.

Miller continued, “We’ve been working on different solutions for different things along the way that seem to may be part of the trigger. Obviously, we still have work to do. We’re looking at clearances on particularly the Ford exhaust because they seem to have been having a little bit more trouble with this than the others.”

“There’s a lot of work going on, a lot of collaboration within the industry to get to the bottom of it and we have to get to the bottom of it quick, obviously.”

With this retirement, Harvick’s quest for another Cup Series title is off to a bad start. The good news is that he has two races to buck up and escape elimination. On the other end of the scale, he is sitting dead last in the Playoff standings, so he may need a win or a miracle.
