Throwback: Jeff Gordon Loses his Cool at Jeff Burton in the 2010 Texas 500

The 2010 Texas 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway will always be remembered for the drama that went down during the race. From Kyle Busch’s obscene gesture to an official, to a No. 24/48 crew swap, and finally to Jeff Gordon and Jeff Burton brawling on the track.

This surprised many fans because Gordon and Burton were two of the sports’ highest respected drivers. Additionally, Burton is fondly known as the ‘Mayor of the Garage’ and often plays the voice of reason in the paddock.

Meanwhile, Jeff Gordon is well-known for being a professional and a highly mature driver.

However, this particularly ugly incident forced them to throw all professionalism out of the window. During the race, Martin Truex Jr. brought out a caution and Jeff Burton happened to collide with Jeff Gordon causing them both to wreck.

Jeff Gordon was furious with Burton

Once both cars skidded to a halt and ended their races, a fuming Gordon stormed out of his car and up to Burton. The situation escalated further once fists began to fly and they traded blows before being separated.

According to Gordon, the whole thing stemmed from the previous green flag lap before the caution. As it turned out, Burton went wide at turn three so Gordon pounced.

Although there were three car lengths between the cars, he somehow managed to collide with him.

Ever the diplomat, Burton confessed that the incident with Gordon was accidental. Therefore, he had every right to be mad. Burton said, “Well, we came off turn four and he drove underneath me and when he drove underneath me, I should’ve let him go. He pulled up next to me to tell me he was upset with me.

“Then I went to pull up next to him to acknowledge him, to say he was right. I turned left, and he was turning left, and we just hung up. And when we hung up, off we went. I honestly don’t know what happened.
