“It was the toughest decision I’ve had to make,” said Toni Breidinger in her interview at the pit stop. Breidinger got a foot burn in one of her previous races, making it difficult to conclude the Watkins Glen race. She opted to let her crew chief, Cayden Lapcevich, finish her race.

This is the first time that a crew chief has substituted for a driver. But it’s not the only thing interesting about this crew chief. It is worth noting that Lapcevich is just 24-yo and is a former Canadian race car driver. He is the 2016 NASCAR Canada Series champion. NASCAR fans are mesmerized by every detail around this crew chief and the crazy turn of events at WGI.

How has Toni Breidinger’s season been so far?

The 2024 ARCA Menards Series has turned out to be nowhere near ideal for the Venturini Motorsports driver. Breidinger has been battling with successive misfortunate events across her races. Wrecks, performance issues, a foot burn; the hurdles in this season seem endless for the young driver.

Despite all the resistance, Breidinger gave her best shot to get on with the race this weekend. But she ultimately chose to look at the bigger picture. While it is never easy for a race car driver to submit to a challenge, a wiser approach is to do the needful. She was confident that her crew chief was more than capable of successfully getting the car past the finish line.

“Never thought I would have to pull myself off a race. But I know Cayden will finish it off well,” asserted Breidinger. Bob Pockrass reported on X, “This was the plan if Breidinger was still feeling pain.”

Breidinger’s team has been swallowing down their expectations on race at a time. With the season nearing its end, there isn’t much hope left for scoring points. However, a race win is still on the cards if the stars align for the team. Still, most fans were cheerful and appreciative of the efforts that the driver and the team have been putting into the fight.

The woes of the #25 driver have not gone unnoticed by the fans. Irrespective of the results, the supporters chose to be kind and congratulated Breidinger for the attempt at completing the race. A staunch fan praised the driver: “Toni is a legend for even attempting this, that is no easy feat to be racing in that condition”.

“She still did one hell of a job out there 👍”, wrote a user on X. Another one wished the driver a speedy recovery as they commented, “Godspeed young lady, heal fast! @ToniBreidinger.” Others were more keen on the unique breed crew chief, who is talented enough to replace his driver. One user wrote, “Cool to see Cayden Lapcevich behind the wheel of a car. Talented canadian driver”

Even the track announcers were amazed by the sight of a crew chief getting out of the box and in the car. “This isn’t anyone’s crew chief. He is a driver,” said the announcer. A fan complimented Lapcevich on his talent: “Lapcevich is turning faster times almost a second faster lap after lap.” Then, a user suggested, “a crew chief winning the race gonna be generational.” Lapcevich has a young brother who is also a Canada Series champion.

While this race was unsurprisingly dominated by Connor Zilisch, Breidinger hopes that she can make a mark in the season that’s remaining.
