During his peak, Stewart was one of the most dominant drivers on the track, and his raw pace, racecraft, and endurance seemed impossible to beat. Even when he moved away from NASCAR, he continued racing in the NHRA in the Top Fuel Class, joined by his wife, Leah Pruett. But it all goes back to the beginning of his racing career, when Stewart’s parents remained a cornerstone in helping him to become the driver he is today. Who are Tony Stewart’s parents?

Tony Stewart was born to Nelson Stewart and Pam Boas on the 20th of May, 1971. Unlike many drivers, Stewart does not come from a family of racers; however, racing was a huge part of his family. In fact, his father, Nelson Stewart, used to race with Tony in his early years in the grassroots competitions. This naturally made them support Tony’s racing dreams.

Nelson Stewart was born in 1938 in Columbus, Indiana. He had an early interest in racing at amateur tracks before Tony was born. However, that never became his profession. He worked a full-time role as a traveling salesman, so it wasn’t very easy for Tony to carry on with his hobby of racing. But considering that his father also raced part-time occasionally, he supported his son. He also had some basic knowledge of car mechanics.

As for his mother, Pam Boas worked as a receptionist in a doctor’s office in the early years when Tony was born and growing up. Once Tony became more successful and established the Tony Stewart Foundation, which focuses on helping chronically ill children, injured racers, and animals in need, she took on an official role as the treasurer and board member of the foundation. She helps with the administrative, work, and fundraising activities tied to the charity.

Moreover, both Nelson and Pam kept their personal lives private for a long time, and hence, there is no credible information available about their first meeting and date of marriage.

However, it is known that his parents divorced when Tony was in high school. He spent more time with his father after this, but his mother still assisted him in building his racing career.

Both of Stewart’s parents were instrumental in helping him build his career in racing. Although his mother wanted him to focus on his education more, she never stopped him from racing in the grassroots series. Moreover, his father, being a huge racing fan, also helped him fuel his ambition for motorsports.

In fact, during his early years of racing, Nelson Stewart acted as Tony’s crew chief. He was a tough coach to him as well, as Stewart once recalled:

“He never let me settle for second,” said Stewart. “He didn’t like it when we ran second, and he knew that I didn’t like it when we ran second. If he saw that I wasn’t giving 100 percent, then he was on me pretty hard about it. He pushed me to be better.”

These aspects helped Tony Stewart grow and become the successful racing driver that he is today. Even after a decade of his retirement from NASCAR, he is still remembered as one of the greatest drivers to have ever stepped into the sport, having clinched 49 Cup race wins and three championships.
