What looked like a promising top-10 finish for Tony Stewart‘s rookie, Josh Berry, took a wild turn on the final lap as he ended up airborne in a massive crash. Miraculously, he still managed to cross the finish line in P16, thanks to the momentum from the wreck. While Berry was a bit unclear about the chain of events that knocked him out of contention, he surprisingly found a silver lining in the chaos.

Josh Berry was surprisingly relaxed about the wild crash that sent his car flying

During the frenzied final lap of Sunday’s GEICO 500 at Talladega, Corey LaJoie‘s Chevrolet ended up sliding sideways across the finish line after getting tangled in a huge wreck. Amid the chaos, LaJoie’s car scooted underneath Josh Berry’s Ford, launching Berry’s ride into the air. #4’s machine ended up getting dragged, along with the other cars, onto its wheels before crossing the line.

Reflecting on the incident, when asked about what, according to him, happened back there, Josh Berry shrugged it off, saying“Ah, nothing really. Um, Yes. Yeah, I moved to that second lane thinking that whenever that happened, I’d hopefully have a little bit more options. And just I don’t know what happened up in front of us, but they got all crossed up, and then we got turned into the wall. sure if I was running wide open into it. We got knocked up in the air, but thankfully we got hit so hard that it actually carried us over to the start-finish line and we actually finished the race, so that was a plus.”

“Thankfully, everybody knocked me across the finish line, so I was able to finish the race because that’s what’s most important in these deals. We just ride around and save gas and then wreck at the end,” Josh Berry remarked in a follow-up interview.

But Josh Berry and Corey LaJoie weren’t the only ones caught in the chaos. The melee in the trioval snared over a dozen cars, ending in a massive pile-up. While Berry’s car-taking flight was a shocker, LaJoie’s ride didn’t fare much better.

Corey LaJoie found himself in a wild spin during the final lap at Talladega, which turned out to be quite the spectacle. It all kicked off when Michael McDowell attempted to shut down Brad Keselowski‘s move to the front during the Geico 500, leading to a chaotic shuffle that saw Tyler Reddick sneak through to clinch his first NASCAR Cup Series win of 2024, with Michael Jordan watching from the stands.

In the midst of the turmoil, LaJoie’s #7 got tangled up, spinning completely around before miraculously crossing the finish line right side up. Post-race, LaJoie shared, “Today, I was the one upside down. I did a full rotation. So, I did went left side on the ground for a bit. Then it kind of stopped. Then it flipped over, hit the roof and then landed on all fours,” he explained after the race. “And the all-four hit was pretty big. I’m glad I slipped past the start-finish line though.”

Remarkably, this was LaJoie’s first-ever flip in a major race car. He didn’t sugarcoat his experience, noting, “Just never could quite get [the car] in the right spot at the right time there at the end, and then you just know you’re just waiting to pile them up. Good thing I tugged, gave the belts a good-old tuggy with about three to go, so I didn’t bounce around as much.”
