Going back to no stage cautions, last week’s race at the Circuit of The Americas drew mixed reviews from drivers and fans. While some criticized NASCAR for removing stage cautions, others were unhappy with the fact that the race comprised triple overtime. Amid all this, advising the governing body on how they could have stopped the silliness arising from the three overtimes, former Cup driver Dale Earnhardt Jr shared his views in a recent episode of his podcast.
While discussing on Dale Jr Download how the green-white-checkered rule was the culprit behind it all, Earnhardt Jr said, “I don’t mind a green-white-checkered.”
“I think it’s great to try to get a green flag finish for our fans. But I think I am fine saying to the ticket purchaser for this race this weekend at Richmond ‘I am gonna give you one attempt. Not unlimited attempts. This ain’t a damn circus. I am gonna try my hardest one time to get you a green flag finish. I am not gonna in under caution, I am gonna go one time for a green-white-checkered.”

This came after IMSA racer Jordan Taylor and F1 drivers Kimi Raikkonen & Jenson Button opened up about the extremely aggressive and competitive racing during the last laps at COTA.
Is NASCAR greedy for ‘unlimited cake?’
Upset by the reviews from the F1 and IMSA drivers, Dale Earnhardt Jr suggested that a one-attempt rule for overtime could have actually saved the day at COTA.
He continued, “If I am coming to a race, that’s enough. I want you to just try. One time! Alright? I don’t need three, I don’t need unlimited. I don’t think we need to go to single file restarts. And that right there would have addressed the issue and that right there would have stopped the silliness from continuing – Having a limitation!”

Furthermore, the JR Motorsports owner called out the governing body for being greedy for a green-white-checkered finish by allowing multiple attempts in the form of overtime.
He said, “Too much cake can make you sick. Cake is great. A good piece of cake. But damn! Do you need the whole pie? Do you need unlimited cake? Just eat all you can until you wanna throw up?”

Dale Earnhardt Jr expresses his disappointment with F1 and IMSA seeing NASCAR’s ‘worst’
Apart from his issues with the green-white-checkered finish, Dale Earnhardt Jr expressed his disappointment with the way the COTA race turned out during the last laps.
He stated, “We want these F1 guys to come back. We want the IMSA guys to come back. I feel like what they were exposed to at the end for better or worse, whether you like it or not, whether you care or not, I’d rather they had not seen our worst. Or been a part of us being our worst selves.”

However, Earnhardt Jr refused to pin the blame on the governing body or the drivers. Citing that NASCAR is a family, Earnhardt Jr accepted that there were issues with the race at COTA. But at the same time, he also made it clear that opinions from any critics outside of the NASCAR community offend him.
