For Michael Jordan, what should have been a defining celebration at the Daytona 500 took an unexpected turn almost as quickly as the checkered flag fell. His team, 23XI Racing, had just secured its biggest win yet, with Tyler Reddick surviving the chaos of the final lap. However, the spotlight soon shifted away from the race itself to a moment in Victory Lane that quickly began circulating online. Reactions, very different from the celebratory tone, started pouring in. Now, days later, Reddick has finally addressed the situation that briefly overshadowed the milestone.

“From my perspective, I’ve gotten to know Michael and his family very well over the years I’ve been here with 23XI, and I don’t see what other people see when it comes to this,” Tyler Reddick said in The Stephen A. Smith Show on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio.
These words of reassurance were crucial for Michael Jordan. While capturing the six-time NBA champion effusively celebrating his team’s big win on Victory Lane, cameras also captured a moment between Jordan and Reddick’s son, Beau. Jordan appeared to be pinching the boy’s lower back and brushing his leg. Some online interpreted it as inappropriate, while others insisted it was being taken out of context amid the chaos of Victory Lane.

And Tyler Reddick cleared up this debate. “It’s a huge moment for my family and for his family, and I just put that off to the side and think about the look on (Michael Jordan’s wife) Yvette’s face and the whole family and his whole group when they got to victory lane too, and just how happy everybody was celebrating together. So, that’s where I’m at with it.”
Reddick also emphasized that the Daytona 500 marked the biggest victory of his career, a milestone that came only months after 23XI Racing had fought its way back into the Cup Series following a high-profile legal battle with NASCAR.
Jordan’s relationship with the Reddick family, however, runs far deeper than a single race weekend. He has been seen celebrating with Beau on multiple occasions in the past, including after Reddick’s 2024 Talladega win. According to those close to the team, moments like Sunday’s weren’t unusual. Jordan has long treated Beau like part of the extended 23XI family.
Reports from Victory Lane also clarified that Beau’s shirt had been soaked after Reddick dumped ice water during the celebration, with Jordan seemingly brushing it away rather than engaging in anything inappropriate. The context helped explain what looked far different in slowed-down viral clips.
That familiarity stretches back decades. Jordan has known Reddick’s wife, Alexa, since she was a child and shares a longstanding connection with her father, former MLB pitcher Jose DeLeon. Reddick has previously revealed that Jordan spent time with Alexa’s family during his brief baseball stint in the early 1990s, even recalling stories of Jordan holding her as a baby during spring training with the Chicago White Sox.
While Jordan himself has yet to publicly address the backlash, prominent voices in sports media quickly pushed back against the outrage. Stephen A. Smith defended Jordan on his Straight Shooter show, warning against drawing conclusions from short clips stripped of context. Smith pointed out that Jordan has known Beau for years, frequently celebrating with him after races, and described the viral moment as a harmless interaction blown out of proportion in today’s social media climate.
Situations like this, Smith noted, have become increasingly common for high-profile figures, where split-second moments are magnified and interpreted without the full picture. In Jordan’s case, both Reddick and those close to the team made it clear the celebration was exactly what it looked like in real time: a family-style moment following a career-defining win.
With emotions settled, attention has gradually shifted back to what unfolded on the track. Rather than defining the day, the brief controversy has faded behind the significance of 23XI Racing’s breakthrough Daytona 500 triumph, a win that further cemented Jordan’s growing influence within NASCAR.
A symbol of victory
In 2025, Michael Jordan’s team was teetering on the verge of downfall. 23XI Racing was involved in an intense NASCAR lawsuit alongside Front Row Motorsports. The showdown with NASCAR cost them their chartered positions in mid-year, and they had to run as open teams. However, the lawsuit trial in December flipped the narrative in Jordan and Co.’s favor, as they secured permanent charters.
And to start off 2026, Michael Jordan fetched another victory at the Daytona 500.
These events convinced Ken Willis of the Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL that Michael Jordan is “becoming the face of NASCAR.” Willis noted that NASCAR Chair & CEO Jim France’s appearance in Victory Lane was unique. He was “congratulating everyone, including Michael Jordan, green-lights that effort. No one can recall Jim being in Victory Lane after a Daytona 500.”
Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing, also highlighted Michael Jordan’s prestige. “It’s big for the sport. He’s the most popular athlete in the world; I don’t think there’s any disputing that. And he loves the sport.”
Clearly, the Daytona 500 win elevated Michael Jordan’s position rather than tarnishing it. Despite the wave of mixed remarks about his actions, his driver’s comments cleared up the controversy.
