Back in 2014, Carl Edwards was on track to win at the Bristol Motor Speedway. However, with three laps to go, there was a sudden caution flag thrown. Admittedly, nobody knew why the caution was out because nobody had crashed or brushed the wall. On the bright side, Edwards was still able to hold off teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr to win the race.

As it turned out, there was a technical malfunction, which resulted in the lights unexpectedly blinking on. Coincidentally, it began to rain during the caution period, and that ended the race, to Edwards’ relief. So, the #99 driver managed to win the race ahead of teammate Stenhouse Jr.

According to some explanations, one of the flag people accidentally leaned on the manual override switch. Once the officials realized that the caution lights were on, they threw the flag. From there, the officials in the race control tower froze the field.

What did this Bristol win mean for Carl Edwards?

This win was his 22nd career win in the NASCAR Cup Series, and he went on to take six more. Sadly, he never quite got close to a Cup Series title, but his best finish was a 2nd place in 2008 and 2011. In the first instance, he lost the title to Jimmie Johnson, and the second occasion saw Tony Stewart take the victory.

Meanwhile, teammate Ricky Stenhouse Jr took what would be his best career finish in the Cup Series until 2017. Aric Almirola was third, with Stewart and Marcos Ambrose completing the Top 5.
