When William Byron triumphed at the Martinsville Speedway, it was a very emotional day for him and his family. This was because, on that day last year, his mother suffered a stroke. Later on, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor and subsequently endured surgery, pneumonia, and treatment for the tumor. This time around, Dana Byron was present to watch her son storm to Victory Lane.

In light of this, Hendrick Motorsports vice president, Jeff Gordon led a round of applause for her.

Gordon said, “She’s here in the back. So a year later, its awesome to come back and have a win”. At that point, many began to applaud her for her perseverance. All in all, it was a truly special day for the Byron family. This is because it proved that Dana fought back from her diagnosis and made a full recovery.

What does this win mean for Jeff Gordon and William Byron?

Moving away from the emotional impact of the win, there is another thing to focus on. To be precise, the championship aspect is hugely important, and it had a big impact. The #24 driver has now rocketed up to 3rd in the standings, behind teammate Chase Elliott and Penske driver Ryan Blaney.

As a bonus, William Byron has pretty much booked his berth in the Playoffs. He will join his teammates Alex Bowman and Kyle Larson, and hope that Chase Elliott joins them. Although the #9 driver is leading the championship, he has yet to win a Cup race. While his championship leader status will be helpful in securing a playoff spot, a win will come a long way in helping him.

Obviously, Byron will probably have to really fight if he wants to add more wins under his belt. His first opponents will be his teammates, with the likes of Joe Gibbs Racing and Team Penske coming next. Without a doubt, vice president Jeff Gordon wants that trophy in the Hendrick cabinet.
