Elliott was crowned champion after the race at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, which saw drama and excitement levels piqued to the limit. Especially considering how he was forced to start from the back of the grid after twice failing a pre-race inspection.

Elliott, in his fourth season as a full-time Cup driver, won five races in the regular season. The win at Martinsville in the Round of 8 proved to be a huge morale booster for him.
