Past incidents at Dover for Jimmie Johnson

Back in the Dover 400 race in 2006, Johnson was forced to make another save as he did on Saturday. During the qualifying session, Johnson lost control of his car as he came around the final corner, and suffered a spin. The No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports car spun 360 degrees twice but did not hit the inside wall.

More recently, Johnson led an 18-car crash during the Dover race in 2016 after his car failed to accelerate on the restart, with 40 laps to go. He finished in 25th place on that day.

Johnson’s final race weekend at Dover

Johnson’s 7th place result on Saturday at Dover was an important one as he pipped William Byron in the playoff race. Johnson now holds the final playoff spot with two races to go in the regular season.

With another race set to take place at Dover, things might be looking up for the 44-year-old.

Johnson is also set to race for the last time at Dover on Sunday. He has sealed 11 of his 83 Cup Series wins at the iconic track. The seven-time Cup Series Champion admitted that it will be a bitter-sweet ride for him as he transitions into the final phase of his storied career at the track.

“We have something to build on tonight and we will come back tomorrow and have something left for them. Bittersweet day tomorrow for me – my final Dover race,” Johnson said.
