WATCH: Jimmie Johnson Relives His Epic Battle with Matt Kenseth at Texas Motor Speedway

Having won seven times at the Texas Motor Speedway, Jimmie Johnson has several memories attached to the racetrack in his 20-year career. Recently, he sat down and recounted some stories from the track. According to Johnson, the one race that stuck out vividly was the one where he battled Matt Kenseth for the win.

He set the scene at night, where he was in a great position in terms of points. At the time, Johnson was running in 2nd and in a car that was capable of winning. The Hendrick Motorsports driver also knew that he could trust a driver of Kenseth’s caliber in a straight duel.

Johnson said, “We raced hard and it was for many laps, side-by-side. Both of us were slipping and sliding around. Eventually, I got in at Turn 4 with a couple of laps to go and got it done. That was a very interesting race in trying to pay attention to may be the devil on one shoulder and the angel on the other. Just trying to work that out.”

The 45-year-old also confessed that there was an occasion where he won but didn’t deserve it. On this occasion, he was battling with his teammate, Jeff Gordon. Gordon boasted of the better car, and it showed in the latter stages of the race. He had an excellent start, but 3rd-placed rookie Brad Keselowski had an equally good one. Somehow, the two clipped each other and Gordon’s tire got cut.

Johnson went on to win the race, and the team celebrated with him. However, they noticed that the crowd’s attention was partially diverted to some commotion in pit road. Later on, he found out that a fuming Gordon confronted Keselowski and the two of them brawled for a bit.

According to Gordon, “I just got slammed by the #2 [Brad Keselowski] and it cut my left rear tire. He’s just a dips**t, you know. The way he races, I don’t know how he won a championship. I’m just sick and tired of him and that is why everybody’s fighting him and running him down. Your emotions are high and that was a huge race for us.”

Coming back to Jimmie Johnson, the NASCAR veteran will be keen to finish the 2020 season. Once that is complete, he can look forward to the 2021 season, where he will make his IndyCar debut.
