Justin Allgaier did not shy away from showing his displeasure towards veteran racer AJ Allmendinger after the latter cost him a top-five finish in the NASCAR Xfinity Series race on Saturday at the Daytona Road Course. As soon as the race ended, Allgaier rushed towards Allmendinger even without removing his helmet, and the two had a heated argument.

Allmendinger was apologetic to Allgaier and also in a post-race interview, but the JR Motorsports driver was furious. In the closing laps, Allgaier and Allmendinger were both gunning for a top-five finish before Allmendinger overshot the entry at Turn 6. His No. 16 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet then collided with Allgaier’s No. 7 JR Motorsports Chevrolet, spinning Allgaier out of the top five.

Justin Allgaier speaks his mind

Allmendinger held on to finish fourth but Allgaier had to settle for ninth place. “That’s just dumb, said Allgaier to Allmendinger after he stormed towards him on the pit road after the race. Allmendinger agreed he was at fault before also saying, “It was a mistake. I’ve seen you make a lot of them.”

Speaking after the race, Allgaier explained his anger and also said that this is not the first time Allmendinger had wrecked him. Allgaier expressed his frustration towards a year that has seen him without a win so far. “Getting wrecked, plain and simple. He just made a dumb, dumb decision,” Justin Allgaier said to NBC Sports. “Obviously I’ve not seen a replay, but it’s pretty easy to tell what happened. I don’t know if we could’ve held him off at the end of the race there, but he just drove in there and cleaned me out,” he added.

“2020 has been just like that right there, and I’m over it. It’s not the first time AJ’s wrecked me, and it’s just hard when the same guy wrecks you over and over again,” Allgaier continued.

Allmendinger said that Allgaier has a right to be mad at him and also explained the incident. “I mean, he should be mad. That’s my fault. It wasn’t anything intentional, but that was my fault,” Allmendinger admitted.

“I got in there trying to get under (Andy) Lally, and honestly I didn’t even drive it in that hard. I had the Lally pass done, and as soon as I touched the brake pedal, it started wheel-hopping, and as soon as it did, I was trying to clear out of the way, like I was trying to turn right to get away from the 7 and miss him. I got into him, so he should be mad, and I apologized to his race team,” he added.

“He says I’ve wrecked him a lot in the past. I’m not really sure of that. If that’s the case, I’m sorry,” Allmendinger concluded.
