The Chili Bowl Nationals is currently underway and there have been plenty of thrills and spills. During one of the races, there was a massive incident involving Ryan Bernal and Chuck McGillivray. The two were battling for the race lead when Bernal dived down the inside of McGillivray.

Unfortunately, his right rear tire clipped the left front of McGillivray. Since Bernal was going at a fairly rapid pace, he got tipped into a series of frightening barrel rolls. The rollercoaster continued for a few seconds before his car ended up resting on its side. As it turned out, his opponent did not escape unscathed either, as his own car ended up on its roof.

Speaking after the crash, Bernal said, “I don’t know, I’ll know probably tomorrow. Yeah I’m good. Everywhere I went, I just felt like he [McGillivray] was there everywhere. I tried to go to the top and went down to the bottom. Every lap he would get completely locked up sideways. I think he got sideways right in front of me.”

How did the rest of the Chili Bowl Nationals play out?

Sadly for them, the crash meant that neither driver advanced to the main event. Thank the heavens that both drivers were able to walk away from the accident. Afterward, a slightly shaken Bernal went over to check up on his opponent, and he did exchange a few words with him.

It was a bit of a shame because the Matt Wood Racing driver was definitely a favorite. He was part of a six-man team with Shane Golobic, Colby Copeland, Mitchel Moles, Zeb Wise, and Kaidon Brown. Unfortunately, it is now the end of the road for Bernal, and he will have to try again next time. Meanwhile, the finalists will be getting ready for the showdown on Saturday.
