The NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Daytona International Speedway saw as many as nine cautions and a red flag. Coupled with a last-lap finish, the race had all that we expect from a Daytona race.  But the ‘Big One’ as they call it came in the second stage when multiple cars were involved in a wreck that saw many drivers slip out of contention.

On Lap 39, 13 cars got caught up in a wreck on Turn 4. It all started with Brandon Jones and Chase Briscoe, who started on pole position. Jones in the No. 19 car tried to switch lanes but ended up making contact with Briscoe while exiting the turn. Jones spun and hit Brett Moffitt’s No. 2 car. Many cars followed and hit each other in a chaotic wreck.

Multiple cars wrecked in the ‘Big One’ at Daytona

Noah Gragson, Michael Annett, Justin Allgaier were some of the others involved in the wreck apart from Jones, Moffitt, and Briscoe. Allgaier and Joe Graff Jr’s cars also saw some heavy damage. For Gragson, it has been an eventful week having signed a new deal earlier in the week with JR Motorsports that keeps him there for the 2021 season.

The green flag came out on Lap 46. But soon after, on the same lap, Justin Allgaier cut his tire on a turn and spun right in front of other cars that were approaching. That incident caused another multi-car wreck and brought out the red flag.

Another major incident occurred on the final lap that ended up deciding the final outcome. Justin Haley won the race courtesy of a crash between his Kaulig Racing teammates Ross Chastain and AJ Allmendinger. Chastain caught Allmendinger from behind on Turn 4 on the final lap, trying to grab the lead form him.

This sent both drivers into the wall and was enough for Haley to make the winning pass. He eventually won by .253 seconds over Gray Gaulding. Allmendinger led for 58 of the 100 laps and was unfortunate to finish 15th because of the wreck.

The NASCAR Xfinity Series now moves to the Darlington Raceway with four races left in the regular season.
