Old timers in the NASCAR community would remember Morgan Shepherd famously roller-skating on the track. It just goes to show that NASCAR isn’t entirely all work and no play. This was at the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway and was a tradition of his. In fact, he did it in nearly every race track and became quite the sight to behold. However, in 1992, Dale Earnhardt decided to take a page out of Shepherd’s book.

It was hilarious to see Dale Earnhardt so loose and carefree

He may be famously known as the Intimidator, but Dale Sr didn’t look particularly intimidating when he did that. At the time, the drivers were at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for a tire test. Sometime during the session, Dale Earnhardt pinched Kyle Petty’s bicycle and began riding it around the paddock. However, being the daredevil that he was, he figured that riding normally was overrated and chose to sit backward and ride.

Honestly speaking, everyone was used to seeing Dale Earnhardt as an imposing figure and a legend. As a result, it was easy to forget that he is a human being after all and he does have a sense of humour and a playful side. However, it is worth mentioning that the 1992 NASCAR Cup season was not exactly the best year for him. Dale Sr only picked up only one win over the course of the year, and that was at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

This was after he came away from an impressive fifth NASCAR title in 1991. Fortunately, he more than redeemed himself in 1993 and 1994 with championship wins in both years—his 6th and 7th titles. Those two titles were enough to tie him with the legendary Richard Petty and go down in NASCAR history as the GOAT of his generation.

What happened to Kyle Petty’s bicycle

Once Dale Sr had completed his little joyride, he went straight to Kyle Petty and returned the bicycle. Judging from the big smile on his face, he definitely had a good time in between his stint in his car during the tests. During that year, he drove for Richard Childress Racing in his now iconic #3 car.

Over the course of his illustrious career, he racked up an impressive 76 wins. Tragically, his life was cruelly cut short at the 2001 Daytona 500. In this way, it left a deep void in the hearts of, not just the Earnhardt clan, but the entire NASCAR and motor racing community.
