It is always interesting to see drivers from different motorsports leagues come together. Over the years, several NASCAR drivers have publicly met with drivers from other competitions, creating some fan-favorite moments. However, when Jeff Gordon and World Rally Championship legend Marcus Gronholm got together, things got a bit extreme.

With 4 Cup Series championships and an amazing win percentage of 11.55%, Jeff Gordon is one of the most successful and well-respected athletes to have ever competed in the sport. A year after winning his 4th championship in 2001, Gordon shared a cockpit with the former World Rally Championship winner, but did have a smooth sailing.

Marcus Gronholm is one of the greatest motorsports athletes in the world. The two-time champion dominated the World Rally Championship landscape in the 2000s, winning 30 rallies in 8 years. He won the title in 2000 and 2002. It was at the 2002 Race of Champions on November 29 that Gronholm and Jeff Gordon got together for a ride in the former’s rally car.

The two drivers seemed to having a field day with the 4-time Cup Series champion yelping and cheering as the WRC champion navigated his car around the bumpy track. However, it was not long before a scary incident unfolded. Rick Hendrick probably would have had his heart in his mouth at that point in time.

Marcus Gronholm is not someone who is known for making mistakes but on that day, he was not able to get everything right. The 2-time WRC champion clipped a turn wrong which saw the rally car lose its balance and flip 3 times. Gordon was seen closing his arms in order to protect himself but as the car stopped, he was laughing about it.

“How much did this car cost?” the 4-time Cup Series champion asked as he confirmed that he was fine. He then got out of the car and after being checked by the officials, the NASCAR legend jumped up in the air in a jubilant manner. It is no surprise that he thoroughly enjoyed his ride in the rally car.

Gordon is not one who has shied away from trying out different types of motorsports. The 4-time Cup Series champion had even tried his hand at Formula One and might have joined the sport with one of the most legendary F1 teams of all time.

On June 11, 2003, Jeff Gordon and Juan Pablo Montoya swapped their cars at the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Montoya was a part of the 9-time Constructor’s Championship winning team, Williams. While it took some time for the 4-time Cup Series champion to get used to the car, he seemed to get the hang of it as he ran it more.

There were serious discussions of Gordon joining Williams as a driver. According to The Race, the 4-time Cup Series champion revealed his discussions with then-Williams boss, Sir Frank Williams.

“I sat down with Frank, I think he came to Indianapolis after that test for the actual race. I went and sat down and had coffee with them and we talked about it. It might have been a similar kind of probe. It really never got serious or went anywhere, and I really at that time didn’t expect it to because I was so established in NASCAR,” Gordon said.

One take at a time

Drivers these days need to be more like Denny Hamlin and Bubba Wallace. Well, now you know who my favorites are. For me, it all began with my interest in F1, but I was just tired of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen showing unparalleled dominance.
