NASCAR has recently announced its plan to reduce its carbon footprint to zero by 2035 as part of its new impact platform called NASCAR IMPACT. NASCAR’s commitment to achieving net zero operating emissions by 2035 follows its first comprehensive measurement of its carbon footprint. The study measured total emissions from all NASCAR offices, owned race tracks, national series races, and other related operations in 2022. The results informed near-term sustainability priorities, including the development of sustainable racing fuel, 100% renewable electricity at owned race tracks and facilities, expanded recycling efforts, and on-site EV charging stations.

NASCAR’s sustainability efforts will be tracked in an annually published NASCAR IMPACT Report, which will measure the collective impact of other impact-driven functions, including diversity, equity, and inclusion, STEM education, supplier diversity through sourcing and procurement, and a national partnership with Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The report will serve as a tool to measure progress toward sustainability goals and identify new opportunities to contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment.

While many applaud NASCAR’s efforts toward sustainability, some fans are not convinced. Many believe that NASCAR should focus on improving the quality of racing before worrying about environmental sustainability. They argue that better racing will keep fans engaged and interested in the sport, ensuring its future success.

“They should commit to good racing or they won’t have to worry about 2035,” one fan tweeted. “And this will be then end of NASCAR,” another added.

“Nobody wants this, we want better racing,” said a third.

“We won’t be watching”

Some fans even threatened to stop watching the sport altogether, claiming that the emphasis on sustainability will take away from what they love about NASCAR.
