The stories of moonshiner NASCAR pioneer Junior Johnson are pretty famous, almost mythical to an extent. The man was , let’s face it, a legend, an American hero, and one of the most important figures in the history of stock car racing.

But there’s one story that many younger generation fans may not have particularly heard of. This story, as you’d expect, involves moonshine, thrill, and an almost Hollywood-like theatricality to it.

In an interview with Sports Illustrated back in 2013, Johnson confessed his father was once busted with 7200 cases of moonshine, “the largest possession of moonshine there had ever been.”

“We slept on some of the cases,” the Hall of Famer responded when asked about the bust’s whereabouts. “He wouldn’t put it outside where somebody could steal it. He had the upstairs plumb full of whiskey.”

“All except the kitchen and the dining room was full of whiskey.”
