It is no secret that family plays a key role in the success of any athlete. Unsurprisingly, it is no different for a NASCAR driver. The struggles of Bubba Wallace on and off the track have been quite public. Having said that, the Alabama-born racer has come a long way in his career.

For the first time ever he has entered into the 2023 NASCAR Playoffs and it is a massive sign of progress for Wallace. Without a doubt, his parents have played a key role in supporting him. However, the story about his parents isn’t a pleasant one.

Who are Bubba Wallace’s Parents?

In Alabama in 1993, Bubba Wallace was born to Darrell Wallace Sr and Desiree Wallace. At the time, while Darrell owned an industrial cleaning company, Desiree was a social worker and an athlete who ran track at the University of Tennessee. As she describes, Wallace had a curious mind from a very young age.

Speaking about it to GQ Sports in 2020, Desiree said, “He was always one of those kids who was trying to figure out how things worked. He had one of those kind of minds. He could put stuff together at a very early age.” His parents moved to Concord, North Carolina when Wallace was just two years old.

Throughout his career, the 23XI Racing career has stood strongly against any sort of racism. Speaking about it, Desiree explained how Wallace never differentiated with color even in his younger days. She said, “It never was ‘I got my Black-kid friends over here, I got my white friends over there.’ It’s just everybody was friends, no matter what the color,”

It is no secret that Wallace’s family was extremely supportive of him from the onset. However, that came with some unexpected hurdles.

While they were united in that matter, their relationship took a hit when the NASCAR Cup Series driver was young. Darrell Wallace Sr and Desiree Wallace split up then, but didn’t let that affect their individual relationship with Wallace.

In fact, even in recent times, Bubba Wallace has been frequently seen hanging out with his parents. As per The Cinemaholic, it is believed that Desiree currently resides in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is married to George Lawrence. At the same time, even Darrell Wallace Sr has found a new partner and wife in Julie Wallace. They are believed to be staying in Concord, North Carolina.

What happened between Bubba Wallace and his father?

Not many know but Darrell Wallace Sr played a key role in building Bubba Wallace’s racing career. Despite trying his hand at multiple sports, including basketball, it was racing that excited the Alabama-born driver after he was introduced to the sport by one of his dad’s friends.

Citing Bubba’s interest in the sport, Darrell Wallace Sr wasted little time and invested everything possible into his newly found passion. In fact, he was Wallace’s first-ever sponsor. Speaking about it to The Norm, he said, “I was lucky that my dad was able to sponsor me during my early years of competition.”

He added, “I got started when I was nine (2002) racing in Go-Karts, Bandolero, and the Legends series, as well as local late model events. Even with a winning season, and moving up to the modified K&N East series, it still takes sponsorships. I was constantly on the phone. It takes persistence to get sponsorships.”

Without a doubt, Bubba shares a close bond with his father. In fact, Wallace Sr was left quite worried about his son as the #23 driver pushed for a ban on the Confederate flag in 2020. Post his parent’s divorce, Wallace ensures a well-spent time with his father so as to keep their relationship strong and healthy.

Bubba Wallace’s sibling, Brittany Gillispie

Interestingly, Bubba Wallace isn’t the only child of Darrell Wallace Sr and Desiree. They also have a daughter named Brittany Gillispie, who is five years older than Bubba. At the time of his brother’s birth, Brittany took a look at him and christened him “Bubba”. From there on, the nickname stayed.

It is believed that Brittany is an avid basketball fan and has opted to try out her hand at the sport. While Darrell Wallace Sr focused on promoting Bubba’s racing career, Desiree helped Brittany with her basketball career by traveling around the United States. Like Desiree, Brittany too is spotted frequently on the track, cheering his young brother.

Are Bubba Wallace and Rusty Wallace related?

The NASCAR Cup Series has seen plenty of drivers rule the track with 2013 NASCAR Hall of Famer Rusty Wallace being one of them. Given his last name, time and again, it has resulted in confusion relating him to Bubba Wallace. However, both these drivers are not related by other than their love for racing.
