In the past season, NASCAR had seven road course circuits; Charlotte, Watkins, Indianapolis, COTA, Sonoma, Daytona, and Road America. Road-course circuits are, as their name suggests, race circuits that are held on cleared street surfaces or terrain.

Historically, these races were held on actual street circuits, with turns instead of the oval layout of a track. But public safety concerns meant that the races shifted to circuits that resembled street circuits.

The first such race was held in 1957 at Watkins Glen and Buddy Baker won that one.

Since then, many road course races have taken place; let’s see who is the driver that has the most race wins on road course circuits?

Which NASCAR Driver Has the Most Road Course Wins?

The driver with the most wins on a road course track in NASCAR history is the legendary Jeff Gordon.

Gordon won a total of nine times on these circuits; four race wins at Watkins Glen and five race wins at Sonoma. But the reason this feat is all the more impressive for Gordon is that prior to 2021, there were only a handful of opportunities for drivers to add to their road course wins., simply because those types of circuits featured scarcely on the calendar.

The Best Road-Course Drivers in NASCAR

1. Jeff Gordon

As mentioned above, the best driver, statistically on a road course circuit, is Jeff Gordon, with nine wins.

2. Tony Stewart

The three-time NASCAR champion has eight wins to his name.

3. Chase Elliott

NASCAR Cup Series champion of 2020, Elliott already has seven road course wins in his short career.

4. Ricky Rudd and Rusty Wallace (tied)

Rudd and Wallace both have won at road courses six times in their respective careers.

5. Bobby Allison and Darrell Waltrip (tied)

Both Waltrip and Allison won five times each at Riverside in their careers.

6. Tim Richmond, Kyle Busch, and Martin Truex Jr.

The trio of Richmond, Busch, and Truex Jr. have four wins at road course circuits in their career.

7. Mark Martin, Cale Yarborough, Richard Petty, David Pearson, and Kyle Larson

All four of these drivers have three race wins at road course circuits.

Interestingly, all three of Kyle Larson’s three wins came in the 2021 season. And when you further look up on this list, Chase Elliott, at only 26-years of age sits on third.

So, as NASCAR adds more and more road course circuits to the year, we could soon see Gordon’s nine wins turn from a towering all-time record to a dwarf figure.
