Justin Allgaier was hugely disappointed to miss out on the NASCAR Xfinity Series title in the 2020 season. However, he can take comfort in the fact that he has won the popular driver vote. Speaking to SiriusXM Radio, he spoke about winning the award and confessed that it was ‘cool.’
He said, “For me, the sport is and will always be about the people. The race cars are race cars, we do a lot of racing all over the country in all different forms.”
There were so many people involved in the sport and it will always be about them. He also insisted that in the long run, not many fans will remember the trophies won but will remember the drivers’ personalities.
Of course, Allgaier would love to win a championship, but earning the fans’ adoration is just as important. It is also worth noting that this is the second time that Allgaier has won the popular driver vote.
How did Justin Allgaier perform in the 2020 NASCAR championship?
When the Xfinity season concluded, the #7 JR Motorsports driver ended up in the runner-up spot behind Austin Cindric. In addition to that, this was the fourth time he made it to the Championship 4.
Last year, he snatched the Popular Driver vote from his former teammate Elliott Sadler. Sadler himself won the fan-voted award thrice, before he retired from full-time racing in 2018. Naturally, this opened up the opportunity for Justin Allgaier to take over the top spot.
Admittedly, it isn’t really surprising, as Allgaier is well-known for his friendliness and the ease with which he talks to fans. He ended the 2020 season with two wins at the Richmond Raceway and one at the Dover International Speedway.
In addition to that, he was a picture of consistency, with 11 top-five finishes and 19 top-tens in 33 races. In the all-time list, he has notched up 14 wins in the Xfinity Series. Furthermore, his runner-up points finish was a career-best to date.
It is also worth noting that he stepped in for Jimmie Johnson in the Cup Series when he tested positive for COVID-19. Now, Allgaier will be looking forward to the 2021 season.
