The quirky oval in the foothills of the Estrella Mountains has justifiably earned its nickname “the desert oddball”, thanks to its unique dog-leg-shaped turn. However, as NASCAR welds the crown for its 2023 title winner, next weekend’s Cup race at Phoenix Raceway is going to present a unique situation in front of Erin Blaney, and that too, for a very unique reason.

Both her boyfriend and her brother are in the Championship 4. Now, Erin Blaney is definitely in a fix. Who will she cheer for? If she picks her brother, it’ll be her cheering for Team Penske and the Fords, and if she picks her boyfriend, William Byron, Hendrick Motorsports and the Chevys will have her support. Nevertheless, it’s William Byron who revealed how his girlfriend plans to come out of this awkward situation.

William Byron made it to the top 4 after a tiresome run on the shortest NASCAR track. His 30-point cushion did wonders as he beat the other drivers contending for the final two spots solely on points. Nevertheless, he didn’t forget to give a shout-out to his brother-in-law, Ryan Blaney.

Yes, right, brother-in-law! Even though Byron and Blaney’s sister aren’t married yet! Does that mean the young couple is going to tie the knot anytime soon? Well, that is totally up for speculation. But Erin Blaney doesn’t have to deal with that immediately, as she has bigger problems ahead of her. In her mind, perhaps she is struggling to make a choice between her sibling and her boyfriend to support the championship race.

Seeing his girlfriend in misery, maybe William Byron was the one who came up with the idea. He said, “I’m sure she’ll stay out of this. She doesn’t wanna be in the spotlight. She’ll be cheering us all.”

If one can’t pick sides, that might just be the easiest thing to do, or maybe the toughest. Although Erin Blaney wouldn’t want to be the center of attention, the media houses would certainly keep her under their radar to gain insights into who she supports more. Interestingly, Erin Blaney is not the only one under their eagle eyes.

In a scenario where William Byron and Ryan Blaney race door-to-door at the 1-mile racetrack, they could find themselves at a crossroad, one leading to hard racing the opponent and the other racing them clean. Looking at the tough competition that the Grand Finale is, it’s most unlikely that any of the two speedsters would choose the latter. But that comes with its downsides.

Will Ryan Blaney wreck his sister’s boyfriend? Or will William Byron run his girlfriend’s brother into the wall? Byron doesn’t really have the reputation of being a wrecking ball, and neither does Blaney. But Blaney cares more about the end result than he does about the circumstances.

In an NBC interview, Ryan Blaney revisited one of his worst dates. There was a time when Blaney’s date arranged a fake phone call to just get out of the scene. In situations like these, one would be reasonably disappointed. But Blaney is something else. He made sure that he got his money’s worth.

“Just tell me you got to go, tell me you’re not having a good time,” said Blaney, “I was having a great time. And I knew it was fake; you know when it’s fake.”

“I stayed, I had dinner by myself. I’m not gonna leave; we already sat down,” exclaimed Blaney. The host of the show was so impressed at Blaney’s savagery that he gave him a high five.

Hence, it goes without saying that Blaney doesn’t care if anyone disses him. He will earn what he deserves amidst all odds. Will that mentality find its way into his first championship appearance as well? Only time will tell.

One take at a time

It is the unpredictability of the sport that probably intrigues me the most. There was a time when I knew very little about NASCAR. But after I watched the 2011 Ford 400 where Tony Stewart defeated Carl Edwards in a tie-breaker, there has been no going back for me.
