This weekend, the NASCAR paddock heads to the Daytona International Speedway for the final regular season race. For William Byron, this is a make or break race because he is in the thick of a playoff battle. Recently, he spoke to Fox Sports’ Bob Pockrass and previewed the race weekend.

He laid out his ideal strategy to stay ahead of his rivals, Jimmie Johnson, Matt DiBenedetto and Erik Jones. Byron simple said, “Just block really well, you just gotta block like crazy at these places. The only way they can push you is if you block well enough, so they can’t get around you.”

He also revealed that he planned to use his mirrors to their fullest capacity and listen to his spotter as much as possible. At the end of the day, all he has to do is block as much as possible and get pushed ahead.

Truthfully, this will be a hugely difficult battle, given the calibre of Johnson, DiBenedetto and Jones. However, Byron will be sure not to give up the ghost so easily.

The Hendrick Motorsports driver knows that he is well and truly capable of grabbing a berth. However, the other three are no pushovers, especially a veteran like Jimmie Johnson. Johnson will be extra motivated, given that this is his last chance to make it into the NASCAR playoffs before he steps away.

However, William Byron will be hoping to deny him that fairytale end to a 7-time Cup-winning career. Even DiBenedetto and Jones will be eager to spoil the party for Jimmie Johnson.

In the best case scenario for the Hendrick Motorsports team, both their drivers, qualify for the playoffs. A not-so-great scenario will see either one of them making the cut. Finally, the worst case scenario could witness neither William Byron nor Jimmie Johnson make it.
