At the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, William Byron had a terrible race. Sure, he recovered well enough to finish in a fine 10th place, but he could have been a challenger for a win. As it happened, the primary culprit that hindered his race was some on-track debris. To be exact, a floating trash bag suddenly found itself being taken for a ride on the #24 car’s front grill. And Kevin Harvick could certainly sympathize because he had some unexpected objects stuck on his own car.

As a result of the unexpected intrusion, it caused a few problems with the Chevrolet Camaro. In essence, the airflow cut-off meant that the car quickly overheated. When he spoke to Bob Pockrass, Byron admitted that the temperatures soared from around 200°F to nearly 350°F in almost no time. Fortunately, he was able to dive into the pit lane, and the crew got rid of it with great urgency.

Kevin Harvick recalled a similar incident, but his was more bizarre

Harvick recalled in his podcast, “One time we were at Texas and we came in from the race. This is not a lie, I promise you this is a true story. Came in from Texas and there was a $100 bill on my grill screen, that was just hanging there. We didn’t frame it. One of the guys on the team actually works on my Late Model team now, actually is the one who took it off the grill. He kept it. You come in a lot of times and there’ll be razor blades stuck in the nose. Stuff that goes through and is just stuck in the nose. That was the most random thing I ever had, was a $100 bill on my grill.”

Unlike Byron, this was a case of no harm, no foul, and probably happened after the race. Even if Harvick’s car picked it up mid-race, the bill was so small that any detrimental effect was insignificant. Insignificant enough for one of Harvick’s crew members to just calmly pluck it off later.

The #24 driver was lucky that he picked up the debris in the opening stage of the race. This allowed him time to make up for lost time and claw his way back up the order. As mentioned before, he managed to finish the race in the Top 10, the second-highest of the Hendrick Motorsports quartet. While Kyle Larson grabbed the spoils of victory, Byron found himself fourth in the championship standings.

Judging by this performance, William Byron is definitely one to watch in the championship. Especially considering that he started his season on a strong note by winning the Daytona 500. The driver enjoyed a fantastic 2023 campaign, so it wouldn’t come as a surprise if he continued to carry on this form.
