It’s 2022 and the narrative of racecar drivers not being athletes is still going strong. Now, while one can simply use words to counter those who have this absurd mentality, it’s always better to show than tell. This is what Netflix’s recent docu-series, ‘Race: Bubba Wallace’, also kept in its checklist.

The six-episode series that explored the last two years of the NASCAR driver’s life took its audience on a very intimate and raw ride of his day-to-day life. At the same time, fans also got to see what goes inside being a racecar driver, the mental, the physical, and the emotional side of it, something which can clearly be overwhelming for most of us.

“It’s a lot, to be a racecar driver,” Wallace said in a recent interview with CBS. “You get a glimpse of what it’s like. And that’s what I wanted to showcase for everybody tuning in.”

He continued, “We didn’t really hold back on anything. I wanted to show you how mentally, physical, emotionally, everything, draining that the sport is and what it takes to be successful.”

“Well, you get to see otherwise in this docu-series.”

Bubba Wallace reveals the positive impact the docu-series has had on his life

In the same interview, the 23XI Racing driver revealed how his father, Darrell Wallace Sr, with who he shares a fragile, almost fractured relationship as multiple points in the series also explore, texted him after watching the series.

“To be honest with you, the docu-series just came out, and shortly after I received a text message from my father, a very positive text message,” Wallace said.

That surprised me, but my family and I were praying for it. So I think we’re starting to rekindle.”

It will be fascinating to see if and how the positivity of the docuseries gets transferred to the racetrack for Wallace.
