In 2019, Kyle Busch clinched the Cup Series trophy, his second-ever championship triumph. Unfortunately, the 2020 season has been far from kind to the 35-year-old. As it turns out, he is yet to win a race this season, coming as close as 2nd on three occasions.

Truthfully, it is strange to see a defending champion unable to win a single race all year. In fact, he has only bagged one victory in the last 45 races, making it a win drought of mythic proportions.

To make matters even more disconcerting for Busch, the Joe Gibbs Racing team accumulated 15 wins out of the last 45 races.

What has happened to Kyle Busch?

Admittedly, Busch’s drop in form is surprising, because he is an excellent driver. Of course, there have been occasions where lady luck was not on his side. However, after a certain point, a driver’s bad performance cannot be blamed on bad luck.

After a fairly slow start to the season, Busch put in consistent Top-10 performances. He finished no lower than 6th, aside from a few off-day performances that saw him outside the Top-15.

Admittedly, this is a decent performance, but not one that people would expect from a defending champion. Since the Joe Gibbs Racing team has taken 15 wins in the last 45 races, it has nothing to do with the car.

The good news is that he still has a chance to get some wins under his belt because he has qualified for the playoffs. So once the regular season is over, he has at least 10 races to break his jinx.

However, with the likes of Kevin Harvick and Denny Hamlin breathing down his neck, things will not be too easy for him. So Kyle Busch will have to work extremely hard to earn that maiden win of the season, but the team has faith in him and rightly so!
