The New Orleans Pelicans are an American professional basketball team based in New Orleans, Louisiana. The Pelicans compete in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member club of the league’s Western Conference Southwest Division. The team plays their home games in the Smoothie King Center.

The Pelicans were established as the New Orleans Hornets in the 2002–03 season when then-owner of the Charlotte Hornets, George Shinn, relocated the franchise to New Orleans.

The franchise had to be shifted to Oklahoma City temporarily in 2005 owing to the damage caused by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. They spent two seasons there officially known as the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. It was during their time there when a certain Chris Paul joined the franchise.

In 2012, New Orleans Hornets changed to New Orleans Pelicans after a takeover. It was also the season where Anthony Davis was drafted into the squad.

In 16 seasons of play, the franchise has an overall regular season win-loss record of 610–686. They have qualified for the playoffs seven times, winning two playoff series and one division title.

Before the 2019/20 season, the Pelicans had traded their star man Anthony Davis, but also added Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and Lonzo Ball in exchange.
