However, had the Warriors not drafted Curry, his career may have taken a very different path. His mother, Sonya Curry, shed light on her experience on draft night, also revealing an interesting fact about that day.

Sonya Curry shares her experience on Stephen Curry’s draft night

Stephen Curry was picked 7th overall by the Warriors in 2009. This announcement excited several fans but nobody could claim to know how this decision by the Warriors would transpire. 14 years after this moment, the Warriors have won 4 championships and Stephen Curry has become the undisputed king of three pointers. However, his draft night is still etched in his mother, Sonya Curry’s memory.

Curry recently released a documentary feature film about his days in Davidson. The documentary Underrated, released on Apple TV+, has already received several positive reviews. During the promotion of the documentary, Sonya was asked about her moment of relief as a mother. She immediately said, “I would probably say him getting drafted.” However, she went on to reveal a special anecdote about that day.

That day,” she recalled, “it was actually his dad’s birthday so he got drafted on Dell’s birthday. Hearing his name called, even though when they said Golden State Warriors pick him, I had no clue where Golden State was and I was like where are you taking my child?

She then went on to mention how she knew Curry’s time had arrived. “That was the moment because I knew the door had opened….so when the door opened for the NBA, I knew he was gonna walk in,” she said.

Dell Curry had a tenured NBA career before Stephen entered the basketball circuit. As a 6’5 shooting guard, Curry Sr. played for 5 different teams but his most significant time was with the Charlotte Hornets. He retired as the all time leading scorer for the Hornets, before Kemba Walker broke his record. He played a pivotal role in making the Hornets regular playoff contenders back in the 1990s, which also earned him a Sixth Man of the Year award in 1994. Curry also started the three point shooting tradition in his family, retiring as the all time leader in three pointers made for the Hornets.
