Who would have thought a generational player like Stephen Curry would hit sneaker free agency without a clear next step? His split with Under Armour after 13 years, despite a 13th shoe coming, creates a rare opening. The shake-up sparked immediate buzz. And Adidas’ recent moves around other NBA players add to the momentum and hint that Curry could soon find a new partner.

According to NBA insider Michael Scotto, the ‘Three Stripes’ are signing the Wagner brothers to their roster. It is confirmed to be a “multi-year, multi-million dollar deal,” although no specifics are out yet. But no doubt, adding star talent bolsters Adidas’ position in the NBA’s sneaker landscape.

Franz Wagner has been one of the league’s fastest-rising talents, and alongside Paolo Banchero, he continues to push the Orlando Magic forward. This season is no different, with Wagner averaging 22.5 points and a career-high 6.4 rebounds. However, the Magic are still waiting on Moe Wagner, who has yet to debut after January’s ACL surgery. He remains out indefinitely, but his return will be important for their depth.

As sneaker free agents, Adidas was a seldom choice for either of them. In fact, according to Kix Stats, Moe Magner hasn’t worn an Adidas shoe in a single game during his NBA career. He has stuck with variants of Jordans and other Nike sneakers. Franz Wagner has had a similar pattern, fielding the Nike PG 5s the most. The only exception came in a 28-point performance against the Knicks two nights ago, where he wore the Adidas Dame 9. That was probably a way to soft-launch this agreement.

And the future could be bright. The 24-year-old is shining on the hardwood, adding to the optimism of making his first All-Star team this season. Maybe there won’t be a signature sneaker anytime soon. But there’s surely potential for the Wagner brothers to work on something together in collaboration with Adidas. However, the company’s move to add more talent might stand to be a great pitch for arguably the hottest sneaker free agent in the market.

Stephen Curry and Adidas could join hands

For this season, Curry and Under Armour will stay together. They will launch the Curry 13 in February, and his apparel will officially remain in production until October 2026. In the meantime, the Curry Brand, which the two-time MVP acquired, remains independent. Given how popular and impactful Stephen Curry is, he could opt to grow the brand by himself.

However, he is free to join any retail partner to support his vision of “aggressive growth with a continued commitment to keep showing up for the next generation.” The first name in your mind might be Nike. But after they botched the chance to sign him 13 years ago, Curry may not be interested in growing his venture with the Swoosh.

But Adidas is all about curating the next generation. They signed Anthony Edwards, and his signature sneaker is going off the shelves in a hurry. Furthermore, they have modern-day stars such as James Harden, Damian Lillard, Trae Young, and Donovan Mitchell on their roster. If Curry decides to join, the ‘Three Stripes’ could have some of the most dazzling guards on their roster with enough star power to maybe contend with Nike.

They may never reach Jordan Brand territory, but Stephen Curry helped push Under Armour into the spotlight through sheer success. Now, as he nears the end of his career, Adidas could be the partner that lets him close his sneaker chapter on his terms. That might mean giving him real creative control, and with Curry, that’s a concession they likely wouldn’t think twice about.
