Sonya Curry’s struggle with early marriage

Talking about her emotional journey with Jemele and reliving the struggles she went through, Sonya herself gets emotional. Sonya shares her struggle in trying to figure out how to be a young mom, as well as how to be the wife of an NBA player, referring to her now ex-husband Dell Curry. She says that she always knew she was going to be a young mother but she began asking questions like, “How am I gonna be a wife? How am I gonna be the wife of an NBA player?

The question, “How do I hold on to Sonya in the midst of all of this going on?” started bothering Sonya. She remembers not being satisfied with her life at that point. As if this wasn’t enough, her relationship with Dell also went through some challenges; he was also trying to figure out being in the NBA as a young player. During this chaos, her faith stepped in and saved her.

Restoring her children’s faith

Sonya recalls how one day she was at church; as the preacher was talking, she felt as if he was speaking directly to her. She felt like he was telling her to “just give Jesus a try.” Sonya took this as a blessing as she told Jemele, “God just wouldn’t let me go.” This is what deepened and furthered her connection with God. Sonya would go on to inculcate the love of God in all her children.

As a result, she would raise all her children with strong foundations in God. The family would pray together and go to church together, taking part in church community activities. Stephen Curry for one, writes “I can do all things” on his shoes as a reference to the bible verse Philippians 4:13.
