Many recognize Savannah James as the wife of NBA superstar LeBron James. However, Savannah is a multi-faceted woman who has left a mark in multiple industries. She has become a global fashion icon, regularly invited to some of the biggest fashion shows in the world. She is also a philanthropist who has taken an active part in trying to make societal changes in America and around the globe. And more recently, she stands to add another feather to the hat with the announcement of her lending hand in a newer initiative.

Savannah James, on the 11th, announced the launch of the ‘birthFUND’ via her Instagram handle. The project attempts to improve the “broken Maternal health care system,” which is the underlying cause of the USA being the “deadliest Western country to give birth in,” considering 3400 mothers died in the process between 2018 to 2021, according to TIME. In that very same Instagram post, Savannah and birthFund further revealed the goal of the organization. They stated, “We are creating a safety net of resources for families across the country to expand immediate access to quality, life-saving maternal health care. One birth at a time.”

Several prominent figures like Ayesha Curry, Karlie Kloss, Ashley Graham, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, and Serena Williams have joined Savannah James in this initiative. These prominent individuals are regarded as the “founding family” of birthFund, and they have pledged to match every dollar donated by a single donor up to $100,000.

The announcement arrives amidst the persisting rumors of the Savannah and LeBron expecting a fourth child, though with no substantiation from either. Nonetheless, currently a mother three for almost a decade, Savannah is intrinsically deeply invested in birthFund’s goals and motives. However, she isn’t the founder of the organization.

The woman behind birthFund

BirthFund is the brainchild of Elaine Weltheroth. She is a journalist and an editor, who was named Editor-in-Chief for Teen Vogue back in April 2016. Elaine decided to launch birthFund after her own experience of home birth. In a recent interview with Black Love, Elaine said, “After a series of eye-opening encounters with the maternal health system and a life-changing home birth experience with the midwives at Kindred Space L.A., I committed myself to raising awareness about the urgent need to create more access to midwifery care by sharing my story and relentlessly advocating for policy change.”

Elaine even set out to raise funds for perinatal care and midwifery birth support for a family in Los Angeles in December 2023. However, in a surprising turn of events, she managed to raise $16,000 in just 16 hours. The funds raised were enough to support two underprivileged families instead of one.

Encouraged by this success, Elaine managed to get her friends like Savannah James and Serena Williams on board with the idea. During an interview, she even stated that the healthcare system has failed mothers, and now she has taken matters into her own hands. Elaine said, “We’re done waiting for these systems to change. We’re stepping in where the systems won’t. Because it’s on us to save us.”
