Anthony Davis stands as one of the NBA’s elite big men. Entering the league, Davis’ skillset held immense promise, not only for the NBA but also for Team USA. As the top pick in the 2012 draft, he was immediately called upon to represent his country in the 2012 Olympics. Over the years, Davis has showcased glimpses of Hall of Fame potential. Ultimately, he captured the desire of LeBron James to join forces. However, Davis’ tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers has been marked by numerous highs and lows.

Primarily, Davis’ availability has been a perennial question mark. Furthermore, it is constantly preventing him from fully meeting the expectations of fans and the franchise. Even though LeBron James hails Davis as the team’s best player, injuries have hindered Davis from achieving his crowning glory. Nevertheless, in a recent statement, several notable names, including Lakers owner Jeanie Buss, echo the same sentiment as James.

In a recent episode, Malika Andrews was joined by Zach Lowe, Brian Windhorst, and Chiney Ogwumike. Together, the cast delved into the Los Angeles Lakers off-season signings, including LeBron James and Anthony Davis. After briefly touching on Lakers owner Jeanie Buss’ statement regarding Davis, Malika turned to Chiney for her perspective on Davis.

Chiney emphatically stated, “Anthony Davis can absolutely be MVP. Gotta play 65 games though and average 20 minutes. That’s the threshold. But when healthy, he puts up the numbers for that.”

Beyond Davis’ offensive prowess, Chiney highlights the Lakers’ defensive prower, particularly with Anthony Davis on the court. Furthermore, she acknowledges that the primary challenge for Davis lies in delivering peak performances for the team each night.

Davis wants more time as a power forward, not center

The Lakers have effectively addressed their front-court depth concerns in free agency. They did so by not only acquiring new talent but also retaining key players from their previous roster. With the latest addition of Christian Wood, many believe that their roster is now complete.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Davis has made a new request to the Lakers coaching staff. Davis wants to play more minutes in the power forward position. Last season, Davis actively played the center position for almost the entirety of the season. With recent additions, the Lakers can certainly make it happen.

If the Lakers grant Davis’ request, it would result in the team adopting a ‘two-big men’ lineup. While the Lakers have the coaching expertise to make it work, this adjustment could present challenges for LeBron James. It would mean that James would need to take on the small forward position, which may require some adjustments on his part.
