Ex-Warriors star Gilbert Arenas recently weighed in on this situation. He shared a clip of himself talking about it on X, writing in the caption, “Everybody mad at Ayesha Curry like she told Steph to sleep on the couch 😂 She just said she didn’t want to be a wife or mom back then — bruh, half y’all don’t even wanna go to work on Monday! 😭 Let that woman be honest in peace… Steph still winning on and off the court. 🏆💍,” making it clear that the backlash against the couple is a result of misunderstanding.
In the clip itself, Arenas defends Ayesha’s perspective, saying, “I might be the only person that’s on his wife’s side because I understand what she is actually saying, and the fact that so many people are hating this woman. Y’all are lost, I’m sorry. Y’all not understanding what she is really saying.” He highlighted that Ayesha’s intentions with Steph are genuine, and not motivated by money or status.

Arenas elaborated on Ayesha’s mindset: “She said she didn’t see herself with kids. She didn’t see herself married. She’s seen herself as a career woman. She wasn’t considering herself a groupie. This is going to be Steph Curry, and I just want to marry him to sit under him.” He emphasizes that Ayesha approached her relationship with Steph from a stable, independent position, one which prioritized personal growth.

Arenas also added that, “She didn’t consider herself a basketball h– or wife, meaning her intentions with him was purely about him, and we just going to be together and you going to do your thing. I’m going to do my thing. You’re going to be successful. I’m going to be successful.”
Here, he highlights the mutual respect that has always been a part of Steph and Ayesha’s relationship, and how her honesty is in contrast to societal assumptions about women in NBA culture.
This defense of Ayesha Curry was seen as surprising by many, considering that Gilbert Arenas has levied some heavy criticism Steph’s way.
Gilbert Arenas Questions Stephen Curry’s “Generational” Status
In a discussion on his Gil’s Arena podcast, Arenas made it clear that, to him, Stephen Curry is “not a generational talent,” and is instead “a great basketball player.” The retired guard argued that the “generational” label cannot be given to players like Curry and Nikola Jokic, but reserved for those who possess rare or completely unique physical traits.

He was blunt in his assessment: “Steph is not a generational talent… [Victor Wembanyama] is a generational person that is a generational talent. Generational means you can’t mimic it… Curry is a great basketball player. Generational is something that’s once every 20 – when it comes, you’re like, ‘Damn.’”

He gave examples of those he considered truly generational: Magic Johnson’s 6’9 frame combined with his unbelievable passing vision, Shaquille O’Neal’s combination of crazy size and nimble movement, LeBron’s unmatched versatility and frame, and Victor Wembanyama’s unique skillset at 7’4. Curry’s shooting, while extraordinary, are something that are given to him through hard work, and thus, can be replicated. So, according to Arenas, he’s not a generational player.
