The ship has sailed and captain Jimmy Butler isn’t coming back. Well, at least not until his suspension. And there’s no telling if the return will even be in a Miami Heat jersey. Chances are, Jimmy has already played his last match in Florida. With the two personalities of Jimmy Butler and Pat Riley butting heads, there was a ripple effect that shook the Heat locker room. As the captain of the team, Bam Adebayo has responsibilities that he has no option but to face bravely. So he did in Saturday’s practice before the Jazz game, making it clear about how the locker room feels about all the chaos stirred by his dear friend, Jimmy Butler.

On Friday, the Miami Heat released a statement, “We have suspended Jimmy Butler for seven games for multiple instances of conduct detrimental to the team over the course of the season and particularly the last several weeks.” This comes after Butler’s open demand for a trade. “I’m happy here off the court, but I want to be back to somewhat dominant, I want to hoop and I want to help this team win, and right now I’m not doing it,” Jimmy said after the loss to Indiana on Thursday.

Since then, the trade rumors have been running riot, but the franchise’s suspension announcement shook the locker room to its core. “It’s disappointing when you see the organization and the player going head to head like that. But the rest of us gotta figure out how to win games because that still gonna happen,” Bam Adebayo told the press during Saturday’s practice. “So for us, it’s for me as captain is worrying about the other guys and getting them locked in and ready to go try and compete and win a game.”

When asked about his opinion on the franchise’s decision on Jimmy Butler, Adebayo added that it’s about the communication between the two parties and that is not something for the players to worry about. That’s probably exactly what the franchise, and the fans were expecting to hear from their Mr. Dependable. The Heat are 17-15 this season so far and the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference table is not something Erik Spoelstra will be proud of.

The Jimmy Butler situation has been brewing since Pat Riley’s infamous rant in the Heat’s season-ending presser last year. And now finally, it has blown out of proportion. One source close to the NBA front offices in particular believes that the Heat ultimately got burned.

NBA insider calls out Heat’s misjudgment of Jimmy Butler situation

For Jimmy Butler, the equation was simple — give me a max, or I walk out. Pat Riley, who has a history of saying no to big names, including LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Shaquille O’Neal, and more, had the same answer for the six-time NBA All-Star. Reading along the lines of the Heat’s statement gives a clear indication that they are no pushovers. “You could tell in their statements and in the suspension that the Heat are seething mad at the way Jimmy has gone about this,” Brian Windhorst recently said on Sirius XM NBA Radio. According to the NBA insider, the franchise knows what a difference-making player Butler is but still chose to neither extend nor trade him earlier in the offseason.

“But knowing Jimmy Butler and knowing the situation, I felt when the heat chose that path, they were playing with fire, and now they are burned,” Windy concluded. So far, the biggest buzz-generating for the Jimmy Butler trade is from the Warriors. But that was squashed by Anthony Slater. The Mavs are also not interested in trading him. So where does Jimmy end up next? We probably have to wait till Feb 6 to get a clear answer.
